It provides free, outdoor exercise opportunities. The equipment does need to be updated. Please include pullup bars, monkey bars, parallel bars and similar structures. Thak you I would love to see a completely fenced in area for dogs to play. I always want to take my pup there, but there are no off-leash areas or closed off spaces where she can play without escaping. Something also has to be done about the homeless folks who are always lingering about. Until that issue is dealt with no amount of upgrades will make the community feel safe there. Splash pad!! Don’t understand why we don’t have one in SLO when kids love them! Dog park Bathrooms are a must, I don’t even take little kids there anymore because of that and the shady homeless population sleeping around Splash Pad or water feature for kids to play in Dedicated dog park area - people who live downtown need a place for their dogs. we don't all have yards! Water play/splash pad area Trees; walking circuit; hydration station with dog bowl I think park is fine how it is. Bathrooms and lights will cause more parking problems. Lights will ruin the night sky and scare off birds of prey that use park. These birds are protected by the migratory bird protection act. I hope you have a study to see the environmental impact of any park changes. Otherwise you will be responsible for litigation. Splash fountains for kids like at Splash Playground at So. Germantown Recreational Park Check out Mission Playground in San Francisco. Activities for all different kinds of people in one area. Very well designed I would like to see the blacktop resurfaced so it can be used for multiple sports, including roller skating! Light, its scary at night a lot of homeless and very dark. Somethjng to do with dogs more people with dogs use the park then anyone, dog agility course? An area for people to bbq. Resurfacing for multi-sport use (roller derby) I'd love to see a resurfaced BB court with roller derby lines on it. Or an area for roller skating I would love to see the basketball court area resurfaced and painted for multi-use sports, specifically roller skating. During this time of pandemic, roller skating has grown immensely in popularity across the country, yet in our city and county, roller derby skaters and roller skaters in have limited options for open skate venues. I would also like to see the pump track created for everyone, not just children. Adults and children in roller skates, on bikes, skateboards and scooters would all utilize this track, making it multipurpose and serving all in the community. Accessible circulation (paved pathways to get around the park), such as a loop path around the perimeter. Bocce courts remove all but one and maintain surface after 2 years I've seen only one group use one court very occasionally. Lights! Thank u! That field is so dark people walk through and around it all hours. The public gardens need something not sure what people don't realize how much work it takes to create & maintain 1/3 are abandoned maybe invite a garden club in to grow veggies and give to people in need? Thanks for this! More trees I would love to see an adult pump track as well. Expanding the idea of a children's pump track to include use for adults. Mountain biking/off-road cycling is rapidly growing in popularity in our community and an adult sized pump track would greatly compliment a youth track. Adult pump track Trees for shade. Kids, (and seniors), fitness, and playing ought to be the the priority of this park...not a place for the homeless to hang around, please. gated dog park! water for dogs off leash dog run If you could add educational statues that double as something for kids to climb on, that would be awesome! If there are any local artists that can build statues, they probably have some cool ideas. Maybe a small tennis court? Dog park Dog Park Dog park Fenced area for dogs Section for dog park Add dog walk/run area Fenced in dog park. They are great for encouraging community, neighbors meeting, and to discourage breaking leash laws elsewhere. Dog park. Plant some trees for shade. Nature at its best and trees make natural cooling and oxygen and can eliminate pollutants in the air. Pretty landscaped garden. No ugly art please, we have WAY too much of that in SLO. Dog park! There is currently no completely fenced dog park available in slo city limits, this would be a huge benefit to the many dog owners in the community Dog park would be great! Another play structure for older children Add more basketball courts We love the idea of resurfacing the blacktop area as it could be used for another multipurpose roller surface. We would like to see a smooth more roller friendly surface and I would also like to emphasize the extreme importance of safe bathrooms and lights for the area. Santa Rosa Park rink is great but can get very crowded very quickly between hockey, roller derby, recreation roller skaters, basketball, parents with smaller childeren not able to hit the skate park yet, hula hoopers, skate boarders looking for an out of the way place to practice. Update all chain link fencing (perimeter and gym) with architectural fencing. Add a splash pad. We would love to see an expansion and resurfacing of space that Central Coast Roller Derby could utilize for skate practice/events. Make parking lot into another multi use sport court like basketball and pickleball Put in a track using materials like the high school uses so there is a place to walk for exercise off the concrete sidewalks. Inside the track, a garden with benches, trees. Lock the park at night. Add landscaping around the adult fitness area to add shade and beauty I think horseshoe pits a bad idea, park is too small for this dangerous activity. Dirt or DG pump track would allow permeability, better idea than wood or concrete. I am unaware of the priority of the many needs here and really question the wisdom of lighting and night use as well as an additional building for toilets. Please keep open space for flexible uses. A place for houseless folx to receive shelter since many rely on parks A designated dog park !! There’s more than e ohhh room!! We have been raising our children in the Emerson neighborhood and we are regular users of the park. We value the large grass field for various activities that require more space than our yard can provide, we also value the basketball court. The AC surface needs to be resurfaced (at a minimum). The area under the oak tres near the Parks and Recreation building is a wonderful place to get out of the sun and have a break or a meal. The exercise equipment is enjoyed by many, but is in need of a little TLC. My children and I often discuss what improvements/changes we would make to the park. The playground holds no interest for my children and is clearly aimed at a very young population, but other aspects of the park hold universal appeal. The grassy area is a wonderful asset for everyone and should be retained. The basketball court and exercise equipment are both well used. The garden plots are fantastic. The AC area around the basketball courts needs to be better used. Theres is a lot of space that could be better used. At the least it should be resurfaced, but more basketball, pickle ball, handball, gaga ball. With regards to shade, I am an advocate for trees! The existing sand pit (horseshoes?) is not used. The bocce ball courts are used, but not much. I think the ideas aimed at a very young population may suffer some abuse at the hands of older children and adults. This park is not surrounded by homes and is not a park tucked away in a residential neighborhood, so it not supervised by those who feel "ownership". I feel that an emphasis should be placed on general athletic activities, as many of the park users are older children or adults with time to burn and adults from nearby businesses who are looking for a bit of activity after work or during the workday. Off leash dog play area or hours where off leash play is allowed . It’s ridiculous that homeless can sleep, camp, litter all day and letting your well behaved dogs chase a ball is a crime . Dog park Variety of swings for various age ranges Add access ways for the exercise area; use child-proof, spring-loaded, auto-closing gates to improve safety for small children Extension and additional playground structures 3 pickleball courts. 60 x 90 concrete pad Enclosed dog park Updated community garden Please, please add an enclosed dog park! Dog park Fenced areas for Dogs. Enclosed dog park Have you ever seen anyone use the Bocce ball courts? I haven't. Shade is very important. Resurface the blacktop! I love the open space area to roller skate but it's impossible to do except for on the basketball court. Update playground OR create a splash park and/or wading pool area Remove "sand box" on Pismo Street side to extend grass area Really would love to see a kid bike pump track! Our kids would use that a ton Children's swings and monkey bars--something for the bigger kids. Remove the wood chips and put in padding or sand. Synthetic turf. Equipment for older children to play on. More trees, plants, landscaping. Better play structure for kids. Safe routes for children to walk/ride to park. I would like to see more trees planted. A separate play area just for dogs. Also, whether or not you do these things depends on whether you are going to let the homeless population destroy it. They’ll destroy new bathrooms, a zen garden and have taken over the existing picnic tables. No one does anything about it. Also, if you revitalize the field, you need to keep unauthorized people with cleats off it and no one does that now. I like the court idea with open space for yoga class meetups and other group fitness meetups Keep the park the same!!! Maybe add a bench or two. Use this budget money elsewhere Yoga class where not in the smal area dogs poop. Check with local fitness experts in what is best for outdoor use also please put an attractive barrier around this adult space with signage I hardly see these used seriously, but maybe there are people that use them in there exercise regiment? as little steel as possible. Rower none Dog park Pullup bars. Waste of money for exercise equipment. Too much maintenance. You've got the basketball court and field to exercise/run/walk around on for adults and kids; kids have a playground too. You could work in the gardens for some exercise. It's a park, not a gym. Take it out and don't replace. These are silly and rarely used. Multiple elliptical machines don't care what types of structures as long as they are maintained and surface is permeable, ie DG with wood chips atop. Please no more disintegrating rubber mats or blacktop Please don't add that big ugly blue fitness thing. Everything there currently is good, but nearly all of it is broken. Add more open area in the middle for small groups, and/or just a larger mat area for workouts. Please make it accessible for people no real preferences on it tho Updated equipment to allow for current functional fitness. Boxes of different heights for step ups, dips Elliptical since there is only one and the other is broken. They are also not size inclusive so an elliptical that can be used by a variety of body sizes is preferred Equipment inclusive for disabled population Bocce update equipment that is already there Pull up bar, rock climbing wall Vertical jump wall. Yoga poses painted on a wall or on the ground. Breathing exercises (maybe near zen garden if it happens) A lot of the above pictured equipment is already at the park. None, it's a waste of money Tags Q12 Emerson Park Revitalization Please review the map above of a potential design layout of Emerson Park. What are your thoughts? Do you agree with this layout? I like wher eit is now because there is some shade for part of the day from the trees but moving it is not a big problem, as long as it is included in the plan. I like that the bathrooms are far away from the playground. Using Mitchell Park as the example, these restrooms will be transient restrooms. These restrooms are not for people recreating at the park, rather these restrooms are to keep people from defecating at the park (sorry I couldn't resist how well that fit together). Wow, that’s amazing if everything fits that space! I rarely ever see people at the picnic table area so my only thought is decreasing the size of that area. A dog run I love it! We live two blocks away. We would love to see a dirt bike pump track expanded into a bigger feature of the park! The only one around is in Morro Bay and it gets a lot of use. This would be a great feature for neighborhood kids! I would make the playground bigger. More things for the kids to play on. I would also switch the bathroom location with the exercise equipment. I would add a dog park Use more of the open field to expand the proposed size of playground, zen garden and bike pump track Very good! Move the bathrooms closer to playground This plan looks very good, I would add the horseshoe pit next to the shade structure I would remove the bocce ball and make the bike track larger or have one for smaller kids and one for larger kids. I think there is an underestimation on how much the bike track would be used. And add a splash pad ;) The layout looks lovely! Please keep as much grass area as possible:) No need for bocce courts. Need for dog park to be added. No restrooms - just a place for drug use, sex, and crime. Minors to be sexually molested. I love this layout and all the time and effort being put into revitalizing a park in downtown SLO. I live just a few blocks away and my family visits Emerson multiple times a week. These plans will make the park so much more accessible for the community. I am very pleased that the proposed design plans for the restrooms to be distanced from the playground area. I have noticed there are issues at other parks where restrooms are so close to the playground. I would also like to see benches added in areas other than the playground so that un-housed individuals have options to use a bench not in the playground and/or possible fencing around the playground so that it used by children and families only. Seems fine. Not sure if the "Zen Garden" has enough space - maybe the label is too ambitious and it will just be nice to have a vegetated path. Horrible idea. Looks good, but move restrooms to center instead Adding play structure section for older kids would be good (in addition to the younger kid equipment already there). A zipline like the one at sinsheimer would be very popular too. Zen garden with bike sculpture The black top is not big enough for all of those things! It will make the grass space smaller and less enjoyable. This park works because its peaceful and nature. People want a peace of outdoors to go sit in or take their dog. Not some outdoor fitness fun park. Leave the same I would put the bathrooms closer to the playground because it’s easier for adults to walk a little further, but trying to watch/ corral multiple kids playing at the playground when one has to use the bathroom is quite tricky. It’s ok I like it! I just want the blacktop to be big enough for sports! N/A Layout is fine. Leave room for a multi-sport court I would add an area off the BB court for roller skating I would move the fitness equipment to be closer to the picnic tables and expand the basketball court area to make it a multi-use sports space. Pump track could be larger and basketball court could be turned so you’re not shooting balls into the zen garden. Not sure about the zen garden idea. What is the intent for that? If it were to be included, I would consider finding a more tranquil place for it (not along the busiest road). Too cluttered. Could go without the bocce court Somewhat fearful of all those bathrooms near Pismo entrance whatever you decide daily maintenance is crucial!! Larger pump track A zen garden next to a busy street is ridiculous. Emerson doesn’t really suit such a move anyway, and that area could be better used for a larger pump track. My only concern is the proposed layout seems to greatly underestimate the size of these features that are under consideration. Most likely a portion of the existing grass field will have to be used to accommodate the features on the map. Larger pump track I agree I agree with this layout. I would move the restrooms closer to the current Parks n Rec office so they aren't immediately next to the community gardens. Pump track looks too small. Maybe it could extended into the field a little more. I think the current exercise equipment is great. I see people using it every time I pass. No reason to move or shrink it. Where are the horse shoes? I like it I would like the bathroom closer to the playground Bike track seems off where it is.. maybe move it further southwest? I'd shape the Zen Garden into some sort of loop. Possibly incorporating it into the Drought Tolerant Landscaping. Looks good add gated dog runs for large and small dogs (Separately is ideal) Yes The pump track area seems undersized (i would double it) and the restroom building much too large. i would remove the restrooms The location of the restrooms cut off the community gardens from the rest of the park. What if you add more walkways? Get people interested in walking around. Move or add another shade structure over the picnic area, and have more seating areas spread out. Make families think, "lets go to Emerson park for lunch and then a game of bocce ball." Make sure families can watch family members play a game of basketball, and then join in. Another thing is stuff for bikes! Encourage people to bike by having cool bike racks and pumps. I’d like more green space and food forest and dog park. Too much emphasis on exercise equipment. I dont see people using it at Meadow park Would like to see playground enlarged Dog park Looks good. Please consider a fenced area for dogs Dog park in the field section Add dog run. Remove zen garden and add a horseshoe pit. DO NOT ADD EXTRA BATHROOMS OR HYDRATION STATIONS DUE TO TRANSIENT POPULATION! THEY DESTROY ALL OF OUR PARKS! Exercise equipment area is too small. Dog park, mayber where the bike pump or zen garden is. Don't totally agree with layout. Don't need exercise equipment. Do that many people really play bocce ball? Will there be that many kids to ride around a track? Especially since the parents will have to haul the bikes down there for them to ride? Don't need a Zen garden or education garden. Offer the community garden signs to put up on what is being grown for education. Put in some more benches to rest on and contemplate. We need a fenced pet/dog park area. Part of the field could probably be used for that maybe. How about a water feature? Layout seems due to me. There is no coherent design. Everything is just thrown together piecemeal. Dog park! Yes I like it very much! Additional older kid playground Agree yes, i agree Get rid of the restrooms and bocce ball court, add a horse shoe pit, ditch chain link, get a splash pad. Yes Keep exercise equipment where it is restrooms are going to be a problem there. What can we do to include a skate track similar to the track we have as SLO skate park? Put pump track where parking lot it now. Please don't cut down any trees. I don't think we need bocce ball courts, they are not very inclusive. Decrease the area of blacktop. It's too hot, not good for the environment. Use DG, and plant some trees throughout that area to make it more welcoming. Add benches to same area. Bike pump track too close to playground, it should go closer to picnic and restrooms. how about making the blacktop area smaller? I do not agree with the layout, please do not build a stand alone toilet facility along the edge of the park, make an addition to the existing rec building. It's okay but why are the restrooms as big as the basketball courts?!? It should be a simple one person thing, not a complex! I'm worried about attracting homeless to the park, which is used by neighbors. Concerned about the restrooms attracting homeless population. I don't like how big the restrooms are. They should be as small as possible. I would like the restrooms to be sort of hidden by the Parks Office or picnic area and not taking up such a central roll in the park. I also like having some separation between activities. For example, adults use the exercise gear and don't want to be near kids on the playground or bike track. I am a heavy user of the exercise area and we listen to adult music or have adult conversations. Putting us right next to a kid park seems incompatible. Kids are not suppose to use the adult fitness stuff either so keeping them apart is a nice way to accomplish that. I like where the educational garden is I like the restrooms I didn’t know what bocce ball is so I’m wondering if others use the court that much. Add designated dog park I provided a very long comment above I am All for bathrooms but the homeless are going to ruin or abuse them and they will be shit. Also pose a safety issue unless the stall are individual and can be locked with only 1 person at a time. Dog park in field area Looks great! . I would take away the bocce ball. I don't ever see anyone using it. Not have exercise equipment next to the track Agree Great layout, hopefully everything is spaced out because of COVID. There is a lot of blacktop. Redesign to add pickleball. Add dog park Bike pump tracks have been hugely successful in other cities on the west coast. My young children (age 3 & 5) have had most fun at Redmond Pumptrack in Redmond Oregon. It is a pumptrack that is thoughtfully designed and built for all abilities and will be low maintenance for long periods of time. The footprint of the bike pump track may need to be bigger and more separated from playground area to allow for best use. The blacktop seems very crowded. I love the grassy area, but can one of those be moved? Larger educational garden. Make picnic table area more open. Change the field to a dog park Dog park in field. Great use of space I like this layout Fenced dog area. i really like it I’d like exercise equipment immediately adjacent to playground. I’d like to keep an eye on a child If I was supervising them, and I also think it’s important for children to see others using the equipment and exercising and see that this is something they should be doing. Add enclosed dog park to open area Double the basketball courts. why have blacktop?? why not do DG? or other more natural surface. I don't see anyone ever using the bocce ball court. Instead make the bike track or playground larger. I think a bike pump track is a bit excessive.. it doesn’t serve the whole community. Just young children with bikes.. seems unnecessary I wonder how much use the Bocce Court gets? I would like to see a bigger children’s bike park and get rid of the bocce court all together. No need for restrooms. I see those as just getting gross and making this place not as enjoyable. I like where the exercise equipment is and want to keep as much open space as possible. great! Restrooms should be closer to playground if possible. The new layout looks beautiful I don't feel a great need for the restrooms, especially when they take up such a large area that can be used for more fun stuff. Figure out a way people can use the ones at the back of the rec offices, and leave the exercise area where it is. Zen Garden should be moved to surround basketball court and restrooms agree Bigger bike pump track area Too busy- adding too much to one condensed area. I would take out the bike track. Although a great idea, I’ve seen too many kids get bullied on bike tracks. If you have one child on training wheels vs a more aggressive confident kid, it’s no fun. Sunshade: we really do not have a need for that in SLO. We also need to consider how adding restrooms, more benches, and other amenities will invite the homeless to see this as a more desirable area. Never thought I’d have to say that, but we need to keep our public safety a top priority. The layout looks good. Maybe more focus on exercise equipment than bocce ball ct I suggest additional picnic tables/benches near the educational garden and zen garden. I would also add a fenced dog area in quadrant 3. So many people in that neighborhood have dogs but not very much space to let them run around and socialize with other dogs. Looks good. Doubling the size of the community garden would be nice. Lose the zen garden, exercise equipment and the pump track The layout looks nice Less blacktop. looks pretty good. make sure kids can't fall off of pump track and hit concrete edge of playground. Please add soccer goals I’m no expert, but looks great to me! I like the potential design layout shown. I would suggest the Zen Garden should have more depth to it to allow visitors to be immersed in it and would move the Educational Garden next to Zen Garden. Don't bother with "art" bike racks; not practical for bike locking. Climbing art for kids or sitting art is nice. None Keep the park peaceful and quiet This is an eyesore These are eyesores. decorative hydration stations! N/A Beautiful tranqile gardens I'm all for bicyclist having hydration bike racks air pumps it's just that Emerson Park does not have many bikers most people walk there or drive there for activities. They do need a effective bike rack to lock their bikes if they do visit More trees Keep things as natural as possible...make it unique to San Luis Obispo. Let's not make it look like Anywhere, USA. Project that involve the community/children to give them a sense of ownership. A cool entrance sign Edible forest garden with food available to everyone. Permaculture principles. One Cool Earth is a good resource. Dog park More lush plantings, more flowers I like the arch in your depiction. Water feature children can play in Take care of park first. Beautification can be achieved with what you already have. Update! Keep it simple and tasteful and natural. Painted benches, murals, too many tile etc. detract from nature and quiet. A few well placed tasteful garden sculptures maybe. How about a pond or other water feature to enjoy the sounds of water and watch birds come to? All of these make the park look like some kind of 1980s hodgepodge. I wouldn't use any of these design features. Dog park with agility equipment! Architectural fencing. If you surround a bunch of bitchin' beauty with chain link your cause is lost. Make some of the park "fence" a structure people can sit on/crawl around to add sitting space and make it not feel like an obstruction. Flowering plants, plants that attract monarch butterflies. Flowering trees to give some color relief Permeable pavers to replace some of the blacktop. Can define spaces with paver paths between. please use LOCAL space efficient "Peak Racks" for bicycle racks, not "art" racks for bike parking. It's a small park, need to not waste space. Better fencing around the park and other park feature would look much better than the chain link. Also labels on the trees would make the whole park educational. Keep grassy area Maintain the field area, allow for off leash fog area or hours. Monitor and maintain areas dominated by homeless people like the picnic tables and areas near Current play structure Park beautification needs to also consider the overwhelming homeless population that have taken it over and what implications updates may have on the homeless population and local communities ability to participate in and enjoy such updates. None High quality Design features will make the park more attractive in itself. Velosolutions has amazingly designed pumptracks that will make Emerson Park stand out amongst all other SLO parks. Flowerbeds, kid friendly scuplutes. Enclosed and fenced area for Dogs. change the current sculptures, they are old and dated. Tiles get broken and fade, so I caution against that. Painted sidewalks would be fun. Follow the yellow brick road sort of thing. I like the fun bike racks and drought tolerant plants. Water refill stations A tile mosaic would be cool. Additionally i would like to see any benches near the playground area to be within that fencing. It is uncomfortable to have your child playing in the playground while two transients are sitting on the park bench watching your child play. Emerson Park is more comfortable and safe compared to Mitchell Park, but we have seen Emerson Park's transient population increase throughout COVID. Transients are going to hang out at the park, so lets direct that away from where children are playing. I don’t feel prepared to answer this right now. I think there are many factors that provide a sense of safety and I would like to hear discussion from other community members and planners first. Thank you! There are so many homeless people, it keeps me from utilizing the park on a more regular basis. There is also no closed in areas for dogs to play. Lots of people sleeping at this park better night lighting During the day I feel safe but never walk across the park after dark. Safety lighting would be great Lighting and keep homeless out Un-housed individuals often congregate near the play structure on benches and in surrounding areas. I have been told by police officers never to let my child play in the shrubs by the playground. Providing better designated areas for homeless away from the play areas and possibly fencing in play area for minors and their accompanied adults only. An educational garden near the playground would also help keep the planters near the playground safer. Many non locals have threatened elderly and others at the park. Bathrooms will attract more non locals. The tables and benches under the trees by the parking lot. Always crowded with homeless so close to the playground Homeless people practically live on the picnic and barbecue pits. Homeless people sleep and set up tents already. This seems as if you are setting up another McConnell park for the public. Sometimes there have been people who appear schizophrenic yelling at me at my kids while we’re playing. I think SLO needs more support for the homeless and especially people with serious mental illnesses. It would be nice if there was a decent and supportive place where homeless people could camp out (in addition to more programs to help people get housing) so that the kids’ playgrounds don’t turn into tent cities or outdoor psychiatric hospitals. Not enough non-transient users. Need more activity areas to bring people to park. Put up some sort of permanent soccer goals for pick up soccer and you will get people there. Lights Its very very dark at night and there are a lot of homeless people with mental illness sleeping, walking, screaming in the park or hiding. More lights to not allow homeless Again Emerson Park is pitch black at night pitch black. Effective lighting is crucial and should not encroach on the neighborhood around it Lots of homeless dudes At night feels less safe but more lighting could help the matter. Lack of lighting There are occasional times when passing by/through the park in the evening that it feels unsafe, mainly due to lack of adequate lighting. Safety Lighting on walkways would resolve this. There are transients often loitering and littering the area. Security cameras and making sure there are lots of park patrons. I don't know how to answer #17 because of the wording. I often feel safe there. Homeless individuals cutting through from parking lot through grass, stumbling or drawing attention in other ways. Seemed to happen often. If the center of the park is active then it may not happen as much. The lack of lighting at night makes walking through or even by the park very unsettling. People who are unhoused use the park and some experience mental health issues. I believe they have a right to use the park as well and that light would allow all members of the community to feel safe. a lot of homeless in the evening and early morning. Transient population at night would need to be addressed if lighting is going to be added for extended hours. Homeless hanging out at the kids playground, using the bushes as a restroom. More uses so more people are there at one time. There are people pooping in the bushes in plain sight. People hanging out at the picnic benches and acting intimidating. I had a community garden for fifteen years there but don’t feel safe anymore. Homeless hangout Homeless hanging around make me uncomfortable with my grandson Outreach to homeless folks Homeless people often take over picnic table section My wife does not feel safe past sunset walking by the park to our home due to transient population. Better lighting and stricter enforcement on littering, smoking, and all other illegal activity at the park. Dedicate a parking lot or other area for homeless people, and forbid camping in parks. With the rec center there I feel pretty safe in the daytime. Too much junky stuff that no body uses. But few use any city parks any more because transients camp out in them all day. Transients always around. I think public restrooms would make it even worse large back field with no traffic makes or anyone around make me nervous Removing the metal plate in the middle of the field. Physical determinism: a better looking fence would make me feel safer. Lighting During the day it is fine. At night it is very dark. Better lighting, fence with gates that lock overnight, don't allow daytime camping, no grocery carts in the park, no electric bikes, skateboards in the park. I avoid the park when people are camped out in places on the field, look like they have slept there... There are often homeless people sleeping along Pacific Frontage, so I would be nervous to go over there. I like that you can see across park right now, so it feels safe. In the winter, it is VERY dark in the park. Lights would solve this. I felt safe going during the day but there weren’t a lot of places for me to sit. I felt like the only option was to sit in the open field, which is super nice! It was just scary for me to be in such a visible spot as I was alone. Too many homeless folks I come Here at least two times a day to walk my dog . It has been nice to see so many people using and enjoying the park during covid. The homeless who camp out all day every day make a mess or hide under their sleeping bag in the middle of the field smoking and drinking . No one does anything . I let My dog off leash I am Getting a $300 . ticket. I dont Feel safe going anywhere near the picnic tables The homeless population in the past year has grown exponentially and some of them (not all) are very territorial and aggressive. I don’t take my children to the park without my husband because of past experiences and safety concerns Homeless Individuals. Add patrol (Groups) of homeless people on drugs. transient encampments Often accompanied by homeless people sleeping in the field or posting up on the picnic tables and benches. Also the run down equipment leads to a sense of the park being abandoned and not “patrolled” or kept up with. Many homeless around, dark areas by picnic tables and blacktop Keep the homeless people out The homeless congregation on the picnic tables. The equipment isnt great and the kids dont enjoy going Too many homeless actively harassing People and Children. Better lighting there are many homeless who actually live there, some are better than others, but I have to always be on guard. I have to totally on guard when I bring my grandson there. Better lighting. Sometimes there's people sleeping near the RPTA building or at the picnic tables Sometimes there are homeless people there hanging around. I know most homeless people just don't have a place to go, but sometimes there is someone there that is more confrontational. Keep areas open so people can view every place. Although you think the restroom is needed, I believe you are bringing in more problems. Find a way to use the ones art the back of the recipient offices. Lots of homeless people make it feel unsafe That’s a great question. Unfortunately, we need to address the homeless situation. This park always seems dirty and I don’t feel safe, but not sure what to say. To many homeless hanging around. There are frequent homeless folks sleeping in the park and loitering in the parking lot Many homeless people sleeping in picnic area and near fences under oak trees. Suspicious of hazardous trash left behind. As we all know, this is a difficult problem to solve. The camp in the picnic area has grown during the pandemic. The city needs to do more to put homeless people in safe housing. Dark at 5:00 and homeless in park. I’ve also found drug paraphernalia there. Homeless people sleeping on the field, gathering and smoking at the tables Increase police patrol. Somehow all the van campers know they can park their vans or campers out there and sleep there so the perimeter is just dodgy kidnapper vans Tags Q18 Emerson Park Revitalization Is there anything else you would like us to know? It will be important to keep a mixture of recreational opportunities, from the exercise equipment to the garden area, open grass field and basketball courts I am a mom in the neighborhood and a teacher at Hawthorne. This project would be dreamy for our neighborhood. Thank you for your hard work on the project! Accessible bathrooms are a must, along with water stations. Keep as much of the grass area as possible. The new layout with the additions looks great. Resurfacing the blacktop and fixing the basketball courts will make a huge difference. We also love the local art incorporation! We frequent Emerson and it definitely needs an update. We’re excited to see what happens! The children's playground needs a real teeter totter. Parking anywhere near park is impossible. Lights are important for safety and for use during winter for people that work until 5pm Sculptures should be bike related Please keep the park a nice big grass field. Plant some plants or trees or maybe a few benches but KEEP EMERSON PARK FROM BECOMING AN ENCAMPMENT. This will mess with the local community. The homeless already take over a larger portion. We do not need these extra frivolous features. The park is peaceful place. Adding all these children pump track and other stuff is unnecessary and will clog the streets for actual paying locals to live in this specific area. McConnell park is the future for Emerson park at this rate. This park is simple and all of these extra make ties are an eye sore. See above. Facilitate pick up soccer and use will increase. See Mission Playground on Valencia Street in San Francisco. Users of all ages All wheels welcomes if bike pump track. This city has a lack of street and neighborhood lights. It should be a priority to fix. During COVID-19 this park has become a life thread for so many people before Covid it was utilized by very few, some picnickers lots of basketball court action exercisers a couple of fun days on a Sunday in the Park. Now it has become a thread a hope of gathering I see so many different groups old young coming in to this park in a circle discussing whatever having a picnic being outside bringing their children playing games utilizing the field soccer people have come ultimate frisbee people are there tag Football so yes this park needs love attention and everyone's gratitude Regular bathroom checks and cleanings Please please please prioritize the bicycle pump track. My kids and I love the one in MB and would love not to have to drive up there because we live 6 blocks from Emerson Park. Please also allow it to be used by adults, not just kids. no children in my house but grandkids visit often Update the fence surrounding the park. make sure the park is as accsesible as possible. The new fence could double as a bench or another piece of public art. Glad that you are looking into upgrading the park. Would love to know where homeless will be housed. NA Maybe the entrances to the park can be a closed gate instead of an open walkway. Past 10 pm lock the gates to keep people/transients out. Also would feel more secure with my dog if there was no way to get out by the grass field The exercise area is used by a broad range of community members. Please keep it and upgrade it. When is Laguna Lake Park going to be fixed? Its needs some major work but keeps getting put off it seems. Do simple upgrades on Emerson and put the rest of money and efforts towards Laguna Lake Park! And quit painting murals on streets that are distracting and not very pretty. I like most of the utility boxes that are painted. At least most of them are tasteful and reflect aspects of our town and cover up the ugly boxes. There are more that should be painted. Spend money on that! I am frustrated by the grass being closed for half the year. I believe it’s due to the rugby teams that play? It defeats taking my child to the park when the grass is closed. there is a huge unrepresented population of citizens that are roller skating beyond roller derby or roller hockey. With the loss of a few other "public" open spaces to pickle ball (Del Mar Morro Bay, French Park SLO, Meadow Park SLO) we are slowly losing any safe and smooth rolling spots to learn, teach or practice. Homelessness is an issue that can't be tackled by any one thing. What I know is that there are many encampments at Mitchell, in part due to the restrooms. I no longer take my kids to Mitchell. If Emerson is going to be a community park, the community has access to restrooms near by. We would prefer to see our money spent elsewhere. Public art and bike access are two biggest priorities This is a great park that needs some love. This is my neighborhood, I remember when Emerson was a school, then converted (after asbestos buildings removed) to small neighborhood park. Decision was made for NO bathrooms because not a "destination park", it was intended for neighborhood use. I'm concerned about effect on neighborhood if activity encouraged at night, (ie lighting) also rather than a new bathroom building, if toilets must be added, please attach to existing structure of Rec offices. Placing toilets at other edge of property as stand alone is a mistake! More likely to be safer and kept up if part of the existing building, in easy sight of people working there. Public toilets while really necessary have historically become a problem area (remember the ones across from Big Sky Restaurant where they played classical music on a loop in hopes of discouraging people from hanging out there?) The restrooms were closed shortly after they were opened because of continual unresolved problems. Concerned about Emerson becoming like Mitchell Park which I avoid because of people living in the park. Thank you for improving our park!! I love the way the oaks are pruned in the picnic area. Please don't change them. Just an idea but could there be seating arrangements spread out in the park and not concentrated as park picnic tables? Perhaps park benches near trees or next to the garden Please consider an off leash dog area or hours . The number of downtown residents with dogs would appreciate this including me There are not enough trash cans and they are always full. The dog bags run out just as quickly as they are refilled and it may be better to provide more across the park to incentivize people to appropriate pick up after their dogs and dispose of their waste The bike pump track is a phenomenal idea. Just like the skate park and Santa Rosa park, our community would reap immense benefit from another type of outdoor recreation. We are a bike community and a pump track would bring the stoke to our community in a way that would be felt in many aspects of our town. As an avid biker and a person who specifically travels to experience other towns where bike pumptracks are built I highly recommend VELOSOLUTIONS as the premier builders in sustainable cement pumptracks that are fun for ALL ability levels. I have riden many of these types of pumptracks as an advanced mountain biker with my 3 year old son who is on a balance push bike. I have also taught my older 5 year old son how to ride a pedal bike with confidence because of these types of pumptracks. It would be the best addition to this city’s parks and Rec department I can imagine. Please do this! No The City Council and Mayor are doing nothing to provide safety from aggressive homeless. The park has a large open area that is perfect for an enclosed dog park! I love the Park and go there multiple times a week. I appreciate your plan to update the park. This park really could benefit from a shaded area. I like the open space People may think they want the convenience of restrooms, but with the homeless over at the park I think you won't be solving any problems. I think it's great that the park will be revitalized. It would be wonderful if it could include swings for bigger kids, and an off leash dog area (maybe instead of a zen garden) I use to live walking distance from the park and so many people enjoyed the field with their dogs, at the risk of being ticketed. Redoing the field with artificial Turf would make a place for all field sports to play no matter the season. Plus it would deter the vagrants...it's not as comfortable to sleep on. Instead of resurfacing all the blacktop, I suggest removing most of it, putting in plants/trees and only putting new blacktop down in a much smaller area. Police need to patrol on foot. I walk the streets downtown 3 times per day and NEVER see the police. Shameful. Homelessness had degraded this park. Adding bathrooms will make it as bad as Mitchell park. Tags Q19
