Upon arrival and not seeing anything indicating a fire, E3 proceeded to Sub level 1 to check the FACP and silence. Upon investigating, E3 noted light smoke in the area of Div 1, and requested T1 code 2 for assistance. Upon further investigation, E3 found heavy smoke in a stairwell. E3 requested an upgrade to a first alarm. E3 stretched lines for fire attack and waited to make entry into the stairwell until 2-out was in place. BC4 arrived and assumed Johnson IC. T1 crew split, 2 for two out and securing fire alarm; T1 assigned Division 2 with his FF and E3 working for him. Assignment given for fire attack and primary search, starting with division 2, where the fire was believed to be located. T2 assigned Vent Group upon their arrival to tie in with Div 2 and evaluate for vertical or horizontal ventilation. E21 assigned RIC E4 assigned to gear up and stand by at ICP, available for additional needs or response in the city. DC Gutierrez arrived at the scene with a face-to-face IC at the command post. Additional resources canceled. E3 with knockdown and containment at approx 0305. E3 found a light ballast in the hallway burned. Balast housing dripped onto the floor and caused the carpet to melt and burn. Smoke was mostly contained in the stairwell, with upper fire doors closed.
