Subject:Laguna Lake Golf Course Study Session - February 3, 2026 - Agenda Item #7
To the City Council of San Luis Obispo:
In 1970 my late wife and I purchased a lot adjacent to the Laguna Lake Golf Course....1628 Royal
Way.......and built our home. We raised four adopted mixed-race children in our home and, when our
children became adults and left the house, we invited low-income Cal Poly students to live with us free
of charge to help them complete their education. All of us enjoyed watching golfers and walkers on the
course, the numerous events such as a Thanksgiving morning fun run and the wildlife that frequents the
open space, especially in the evenings and night.
Although not a golfer, I have always been a supporter of the course and in the 70's joined a citizen's group
to encourage the city to preserve the golf course. I have always been a good neighbor. Only once has a
golf ball broken one of our windows (kids one evening randomly hitting balls); we had the window fixed,
the golf course management never knew. When four trees were planted right behind our house that
eventually blocked our view of San Luis Mountain, we didn't question the placement assuming it was
best for the golf course. Our family has always felt privileged to live next to the golf course.
I hope the City Council will support the continuation of this space as a golf course. It is already
developed and converted to another recreational use would be costly. Absolutely, I think it would be
extremely short sighted to sell the land and risk losing it as open space.
th
This is my 57 year in San Luis Obispo and at Cal Poly as well. My wife and I have been heavily involved in
the community, often in leadership roles, our whole lives. What a privilege it has been to live here and to
have had careers at the university. Thank you for considering my email and especially for your leadership
and service to our very special city.
