Subject:Regarding February 4th 2026 Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting
Dear Parks and Recreation Commissioners,
I am a resident of San Luis Obispo and live one block away from Emerson Park. I remember
when the park was an elementary school. This is a neighborhood park, not a destination
place with parking, or a draw for tourists.
My dog and I take daily walks in the park and many of my neighbors with dogs do the
same. Our dogs love the grass!
Currently the turf area is multi use. People bring chairs and blankets and enjoy
being on the turf, usually on the perimeter where the trees provide
some shade. Several different groups like the turf for sports and it
gets heavy use.
I understand the desire for a dedicated fenced and gated dog park, but I do not want to lose
turf area to accommodate one. I do not think a small neighborhood park is the right location
for a dedicated dog park at the expense of existing multi use turf.
As a close neighbor who regularly uses this park in its current form, I prefer to keep the turf
area as it is. Please don’t remove turf and replace it with wood chips. Grass is cool, wood
chips hot and dusty. I do not think you can improve Emerson Park by removing or decreasing
the turf area. It’s important to preserve our green spaces in the city core!
Respectfully,
Christie Cutter
