HomeMy WebLinkAbout2/3/2026 Item 7a, Davidson Jean Davidson < To:E-mail Council Website Subject:Exploring Community-Serving Alternatives for Laguna Lake Golf Course Dear Mayor and Members of the San Luis Obispo City Council, I am writing to express my support for the City exploring alternative uses for the Laguna Lake Golf Course property that would better serve the broader community. Public data and prior City discussions indicate that the golf course experiences relatively low utilization compared with other municipal recreational assets, while continuing to require significant land and maintenance resources. Given San Luis Obispo’s ongoing needs for inclusive recreation, youth programming, and equitable access to facilities, this site presents a rare and valuable opportunity. Laguna Lake’s proximity to the City’s only public middle school makes it especially well- suited for after-school and youth programming. A community recreation center, aquatic facility, or similar multi-use public amenity could provide safe, structured opportunities for students during critical after-school hours, while also supporting physical activity and social connection for residents of all ages. In addition, the nearby low-income housing underscores the importance of facilities that are accessible to families with limited resources. Amenities such as swimming lessons, youth recreation programs, and affordable fitness opportunities would directly address gaps in access and advance the City’s equity and public health goals. I encourage the Council to continue evaluating options that maximize community benefit, fiscal responsibility, and long-term public value. Exploring alternative uses for Laguna Lake Golf Course aligns with San Luis Obispo’s commitment to inclusive, forward-looking planning and responsible stewardship of public land. Thank you for your consideration and for your service to our community. Sincerely, Jean Davidson Laguna Lake neighborhood resident and parent of three active SLO kids. 530 400-0664 1
