However, I strongly urge the City Council to reconsider doing so at the expense of the Laguna Golf Course—a true local gem that has served our community for generations. This golf course is uniquely situated across from a middle school, easily accessible to college students, and surrounded by middle-class family neighborhoods. It is one of the few places in our community that genuinely brings together people of all ages and backgrounds. On any given day, you will see parents and children, college students, middle-aged adults, seniors, beginners, and experienced golfers alike. It is welcoming, inclusive, and deeply valued. One of the most important aspects of the Laguna Golf Course is that it has been home to the First Tee program for many years. First Tee provides golf instruction and mentorship to children from all socioeconomic backgrounds, teaching not only the game of golf but also life skills such as integrity, perseverance, and respect. It keeps youth engaged, supported, and off the streets, and many participants go on to play at higher levels or carry the sport—and its lessons—into adulthood. My family of seven has personally benefited from this program. Our children participate in First Tee, and its location is critical—it is close enough that they can walk home safely after lessons. On Tuesdays and/or Thursdays, they go directly from school to the golf course, where they are coached and mentored by Terri Benson, a golf professional, role model, and passionate advocate for youth in this community. They see their friends there, feel a sense of belonging, and truly look forward to this weekly experience. The Laguna Golf Course is a course for everyone. Its rich history, accessibility, and role in youth development make it irreplaceable. While affordable housing is essential, so too are the community spaces that support families, children, and lifelong recreation. I respectfully ask the City Council to consider alternative sites for development and preserve this cherished community asset. Respectfully, Nikki Hendricks Sent from my iPhone 1
