Subject:Parks and Recreation Commission-Emerson Park
Dear Parks and Recreation Commissioners,
I’m outraged to learn that some leaders in the City of San Luis Obispo want to put dogs before children!
And this, In opposition to the City’s own funding application!
It has come to light that the City’s 2019 Prop 68 grant application for Emerson Park —
written by the City itself —describes Emerson Park and the surrounding neighborhood
as “critically deficient in park space, serving a disadvantaged area, and in urgent need of
preserving what little open field space exists for community use.” There is no dog park
proposed — the justification is entirely about scarcity and the importance of this field.
I urge you, as City leaders, to reject the proposal for Emerson Park that cuts into the
open field, carving out a dog park, leaving a space insufficient for baseball or soccer
practice or the free play so vital for children.
My outrage is fueled by the fear that this already small pocket park, so important to the
neighborhood children, will be lost forever.
I write trusting that civic leaders such as you will protect Emerson Park as it is! It’s
beautiful just the way it is.
Thank you for all you do.
