Subject:Laguna Golf Course
To the city council members,
My name is Deborah Shepherd. My home is on the edge of the golf
Course; in fact, the golf course is my back yard. I have lived here for 10 years and I’m greatly distressed
to hear the city council, whose members I have trusted to represent citizens like me, to care for SLO and
the interests of those who live here, are seriously considering replacing our dearly loved, treasured, and
affordable- for -all golf course with housing! There are several reasons I am strongly objecting to any
consideration given to eliminating the Laguna Golf Course:
First, the construction of housing in the course acreage would affect, would lower, the value of the
homes bordering the course. Second, such a project would greatly diminish the peace and beauty of this
area. The construction would have a huge effect on Los Osos Valley Road, which is a heavily used
boulevard connecting Los Osos to SLO. The traffic on this street is already heavy, due to the housing on
Madonna Road, which was green lighted by the council, over the objections of voters living in the area,
and had passed a measure allowing a much smaller development. This was ignored, and now the
traffic is twice what it once was. The strain on public resources , like water, utilities , and school
populations would be significant. Are you prepared to handle the costs of schools, police, fire
departments, and all public facilities that would be needed? Finally, to eliminate the golf course
would have a huge, negative effect on the city as a whole; right now, the course is the only golf
course in the city, available to seniors, students and other who use it every day? It is cost effective
for those of limited incomes, already stressed with the high cost of living here. The course also is a a
frequently used venue for events like parent and child field days, etc.
The money that may be possibly saved would be minimal, compared to the loss of this lovely green
space and the negative, long lasting disappointment and resentment of the residents of SLO, whose
only recourse, should this plan go forward, would be to elect a new city council, one who would
actually listen to the wishes and concerns of those who elected them.
Sincerely,
Deborah Shepherd
