CAO RECOMMENDATIONS: Adopt a resolution supporting the National Register application. BACKGROUND The City has received a letter from Devin and Astrid Gallagher (attached) requesting that the City endorse the approval of a National Register application for the Tribune-Republic Building. The building is a two-story residential structure at 1763 Santa Barbara Street near Railroad Square and directly across the street from the small triangular park In 1990, the City Council adopted a resolution adding this property to the City's Master List of Historical Resources. The property was determined at that time to be "eligible for the national register. Since then the property owners have rehabilitated the structure and have done a significant amount of research into the history of the building. These efforts are reflected in the attached draft National Register Application. CONCURRENCES In February, 1992, the Cultural Heritage Committee (CHC) reviewed the National Register application for the Tribune-Republic Building and recommended that the City Council adopt a resolution in support of the proposed nomination. FISCAL IMPACT None REQUESTED ACTION The City Council should adopt thet attached resolution that will be forwarded to the State Historic Preservation Office. The City's support of this applicant involves no cost to the City and is consistent with the adopted Historic Preservation Guidelines (1987). Attachments Draft City Council Resolution Letter from Devin and Astrid Gallagher (included w/application in Council Offic ) Draft National Register Application for the Tribune-Republic Building (available in Council Office for review) y Resolution No. (1992 Series) A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN LUIS OBISPO SUPPORTING AN APPLICATION FOR INCLUDING THE TRIBUNE-REPUBLIC BUILDING LOCATED AT 1763 SANTA BARBARA STREET ON THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES WHEREAS, the City supports the preservation of important historic and cultural resources within San Luis Obispo, and WHEREAS, the City has identified the structure at 1763 Santa Barbara Street as an important historic structure and has included it on a listing of local landmarks (the Master List of Historic Resources) as potentially eligible for the National Register, and WHEREAS, Devin and Astrid Gallagher have prepared a National Register application for their property at 1763 Santa Barbara Street and have requested that the City endorse said application, and WHEREAS, the San Luis Obispo Cultural Heritage Committee has revieAhe application and fully supports the nomination of the property to the National Register and has recommended that the City Council, by resolution, lend its support to the application. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY the Council of the City of San Luis Obispo that the City.fully supports and endorses the inclusion of the residential structure located at 1763 Santa Barbara Street, known as the Tribune-Republic Building, on the National Register of Historic Places.
