Subject:Laguna Lake Golf Course Study Session, Feb. 2, Item #7
Dear Members of the San Luis Obispo City Council,
My name is Mason Herlihy, and I am a Cal Poly student who was born and raised in San Luis Obispo. For
the past 20 years, Laguna Lake Golf Course has been a meaningful part of my life and my upbringing. I
grew up playing on this course, learning the game, spending time outdoors, and building memories that
are deeply tied to our community.
Laguna Lake Golf Course is more than just a recreational space. It is the only truly affordable and
accessible golf course in San Luis Obispo. It provides a rare opportunity for young people, from
elementary school through college age, to learn and enjoy the game without financial barriers. Removing
this course would make golf in San Luis Obispo even more unattainable for youth and lower-income
community members, cutting off access to a sport that teaches discipline, patience, and lifelong skills.
As someone who grew up here and continues to call San Luis Obispo home, I believe eliminating this
course would be a major loss for future generations. Laguna Lake Golf Course plays an important role in
keeping recreation inclusive and accessible, and I strongly urge the City Council to consider its value to
the community, especially to young people who deserve affordable places to learn, grow, and play.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Mason Herlihy
