Subject:Laguna Lake Golf Course
To the mayor and city council of San Luis Obispo:
I am sending this email to you to register my strong objection for “repurposing “ the golf course. It serves many
purposes right now. It’s a small course that is used and loved by the citizens of our city. I live next to the
course; it fact, the golf course is my backyard. It is used by seniors and others on a limited income, children
learning to play golf after school, the teams of the high school and Cal Poly, and provides a location for many
public events, like Family Field Day. Not to mention that is a green space that deserves preserving for current
and future generations.
I am aware that it costs money to run the course, for water and maintenance. If that is the main objection,
there are other ways to offset the costs, eg, raise the fees, repurpose funds for projects that few citizens use,
like more bike lanes! ( I’m sure there is more…). If the course is turned into housing, you will incur many more
expenses, such as need for more police and fire department members, more schools, and traffic congestion (
already an issue due to the Madonna Road tract). It also would affect the value of the homes bordering the
golf course, devaluing them greatly. And where is the water for multiple homes or apartments going to come
from?
Please do not take away a jewel of San Luis Obispo, used by many and loved by our community. Find some
other unused land in our city for your project, and or other funding to maintain it. You are elected to represent
the needs and interests of your constituents who live here, not those of land developers!
Thank you for your consideration,
Deborah Shepherd
