I’m writing to express my strong support for the retention and continued investment in the Laguna Lake Golf Course. We are fortunate to live in a community that values greenbelts and open space. I understand that preserving a 29-acre recreational facility in a growing suburban area presents challenges, but it is a challenge worth taking on, because this space is truly needed. After reading letters from others on this agenda item and learning about their perspectives and experiences, I am even more convinced that this course is a gem worth protecting. For community members with mobility constraints, the course is an ideal size, allowing them to stay active without pushing beyond their limits. For golfers with limited time, its scale makes it possible to enjoy a full round of their favorite activity in a reasonable timeframe, just minutes from where they live, work, and play. I also appreciated the Parks and Recreation Department’s study. While I acknowledge my own bias, I found it to be a compelling case not only for preserving the course, but for expanding and further investing in it. The demographic data shows strong and sustained use, pointing to a promising future as younger generations continue to discover and embrace the sport. This course also holds a deeply personal place in my heart. I was fortunate to be among the few who were married there. Beyond that, I’ve seen schoolchildren pushing themselves during cross-country meets, families bonding over annual obstacle course runs (mud and all), seniors getting out of the house and connecting through a shared love of the game, and college students supporting one another while playing a sport that humbles even the most confident players. Laguna Lake Golf Course is more than a recreational facility; it is a shared community space that supports health, connection, and belonging across generations. I strongly encourage its preservation and continued investment. With gratitude for your service, time, and consideration, Samantha Welch 1
