I am writing to express my strong support for preserving and reinvesting in Laguna Lake Municipal Golf Course. As a college student who is new to golf, Laguna Lake has been my introduction to the sport. I enrolled in a Cal Poly golf class and practice regularly at Laguna Lake, where the course provides a welcoming, low-pressure environment for beginners like myself. Without a municipal course like this, learning golf as a student would be financially and logistically out of reach. Each semester, dozens of Cal Poly students take golf classes that rely on Laguna Lake as a practice and learning space. For many of us, this is our first exposure to the game, outdoor recreation, and the wellness benefits that come with it. Laguna Lake’s affordability, walkability, and accessibility make it uniquely suited for students, beginners, seniors, and community members who may not otherwise have access to golf or similar outdoor activities. From a student perspective, Laguna Lake is more than just a golf course — it is an educational resource. It provides a real-world setting where we can build new skills, confidence, and healthy habits in a supportive public environment. This kind of opportunity does not exist at private courses or higher-cost facilities. I strongly support maintaining Laguna Lake as a municipal golf course while exploring thoughtful, golf-centered improvements such as enhanced practice areas, beginner and youth programming, and multi-use community spaces that increase participation and long-term sustainability. Reinvestment in the course — rather than repurposing it away from golf — would preserve its public value while strengthening its role in the community. Although I am unable to attend the February 3 study session in person, I wanted to ensure that the perspective of Cal Poly students and beginner golfers like myself is included in the record. Laguna Lake plays a vital role in making recreation, education, and outdoor wellness accessible to our community. Thank you for your time, consideration, and commitment to protecting a public asset that positively impacts students and residents alike. Respectfully, Mia Gutierrez Cal Poly Student 1
