David Drake < To:Advisory Bodies Subject:Attention: Parks and Recreation Commission – Emerson Park Hello, My wife, Rachael, and I own a home directly across from Emerson Park at 496 Pismo Street. Along with many fellow residents who live immediately adjacent to the park, we are strongly opposed to the City’s proposed redesign plans for this beloved neighborhood space. Emerson Park is a rare and historic downtown park valued for its open grassy areas, quiet character, and ability to serve a wide range of community members. The proposal to remove a portion of this open space and replace it with a fenced dog park would fundamentally change the nature of the park, diminishing its recreational and restorative value for residents and visitors alike. Introducing a concentrated dog area—with associated noise and activity—while simultaneously reducing open space for people to walk, exercise, relax, and gather does not seem consistent with the long-standing use or character of the park. This is especially concerning given the recent and significant investment made to expand the Laguna Lake dog park, which already serves the community’s off-leash needs. I respectfully urge you to carefully consider the historic importance and high quality of Emerson Park before approving plans that would permanently alter how this unique downtown space is used and experienced. Thank you for your time and thoughtful consideration. Sincerely, David Drake Owner, 496 Pismo Street Longtime San Luis Obispo Resident 1
