I have been playing on this course since 2010. When I first started there the course was in great shape. There was a bathroom available for use on the course (especially for women), the bridge was in good shape, the fairways were well kept, and the greens were free of weeds and potholes. There was a nice clubhouse to stay after a game and visit with friends, have a bite to eat, a cup of coffee, and a television to watch golf games and enjoy socializing with other community members. Just prior to the clubhouse closing, I believe there was a change in management. Since then the golf course has been poorly managed, left to deteriorate - at times very seriously, and basically ignored. In the meantime, the city has built bike paths, recreational skateboard parks, hiking paths, walking paths, more housing, a vibrant downtown, and multiple avenues for physical and emotional entertainment. However, there has not been the same kind of commitment to this beautiful green space, and creating a vibrant municipal golf course for young and old alike. I understand the county needs more affordable housing. But it also needs to maintain and enrich the community resources that exist and can be used by all. Some argue that only a small bunch of seniors use the golf course. I can tell you that as someone that frequents this course that perspective in incorrect. When the golf course was in good shape, had a club house, and was well maintained, a variety of people and groups used the course for recreational and affordable golf. We had golf funraisers for nonprofits, competitions, and groups of friends coming together to play often. Yes, for many seniors that cannot hike, cannot bike ride, cannot skate board, and live on a limited income, this golf course supports an important recreational activity. In addition, outdoor physical activity strenthens the mental health of seniors and others. I see people who are disabled play golf there weekly. Men’s groups, women’s groups, as well as Cal Poly students, Cuesta students, and young families all use this course. If you invest in developing it, I am sure the golf course will draw more people to play. The groups have decreased over time because you didn’t rebuild the amenities that are important to a golf course. I strongly urge you to consider this space as a landmark for the community of San Luis Obispo. As the community grows make this an investment, market it, promote it for fundraising activities, and stop ignoring this beautiful green space. Thank you for your time, and your efforts in developing innovative approaches to supporting Laguna Lake Golf Course. Jean DeCosta 1
