I have both personal and professional connections to this course and believe it plays an important role in the community, particularly for youth and seniors. As the former CEO of the SLO County Y, we partnered with First Tee to provide golf camps for youth ages K-12 at the Laguna Lake course, which benefited many local youth. When my wife and I were fostering our adopted son, he greatly benefitted from having access to a sport (golf) through the First Tee Program there. Par-three public courses are scarce in our county and they are invaluable for anyone, especially youth, who are starting to learn to play, and are affordable - providing inclusive and accessible opportunities for recreation is critical for local parks and recreation. As a beginner, I myself learned how to play on a similar course, and now as a senior, I personally appreciate the opportunity to play a short course as well. As the digital tide becomes stronger and engages more youth at a young age, providing alternative healthy opportunities to connect with others, have physical activity, build skills and confidence, is critical. The programs and services at Laguna Lake Golf Course provides that for our community members. I understand the challenges of sustaining a golf course financially. I would encourage the City to explore additional strategies that could support the ability to continue operations of the course, outside of closing it entirely. For example, maybe eliminating the 10 hole and converting that to something like a playground or community asset, and shortening the operating hours- allowing residents to walk the course for exercise when the course is closed. Given the attachment the community has to its local parks, I don't think we would be talking about closing those and turning those into housing developments - I hope that we can look at Laguna Lake Golf Course as another important park for the community and keep it as such. Thank you for your consideration - Sincerely, Monica Grant 1
