Stewart and City Council Members 990 Palm Street San Luis Obispo, CA 93401 Dear Mayor Stewart and Members of the City Council: I am writing to express my strong opposition to any potential closure or redevelopment of the Laguna Lake Golf Course in San Luis Obispo. As a frequent visitor to your beautiful city and an avid golfer, I have come to deeply appreciate this course as a vital community asset that serves a diverse range of residents and visitors. It is essential that we preserve this space in its current form to continue supporting education, recreation, and economic vitality. The Laguna Lake Golf Course is far more than just a place to play golf; it is a gem that enriches the lives of many. It hosts local high school and college golf classes, providing invaluable opportunities for young athletes to learn and compete. Programs like the First Tee introduce children to the sport while teaching life skills such as perseverance and integrity. Families, seniors, and tourists alike enjoy its accessible, executive-length layout for casual rounds and outings, fostering intergenerational connections and promoting physical health. Additionally, the course serves as a venue for special events, drawing visitors and boosting local tourism. These uses make it an inclusive hub that contributes to the well-being and vibrancy of San Luis Obispo. I am particularly concerned about rumors or discussions that might lead to paving over the course for housing development or converting it into an expanded park without the golf component. Such changes would irreparably harm the community by eliminating a unique recreational resource that cannot be easily replaced. In a time when open spaces for active leisure are increasingly scarce, prioritizing housing or passive parkland over this established facility would diminish the city’s appeal to families, educators, and visitors. Instead, I urge the Council to explore ways to enhance and maintain the course, ensuring it remains a sustainable and cherished part of Laguna Lake Park for generations to come. I respectfully request that the City Council commit to protecting the Laguna Lake Golf Course from closure or redevelopment. Please consider the voices of the many stakeholders who rely on this space, and prioritize its preservation in any future planning decisions. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss this further and can be reached at macbbv@gmail.com. Thank you for your attention to this important matter and for your dedication to serving the San Luis Obispo community. Sincerely, 1 Mike Calloway 805-674-0231 2
