Subject:Item 6b - Higuera Complete Streets Project
Dear Mayor Stewart and City Council Members,
I am writing to express my enthusiastic support for the Higuera Complete Streets Project and to urge you
to adopt staff’s recommendations to approve the plans and funding.
This project is personal to me. I've commuted to work by bike along Higuera (Marsh to Madonna section)
multiple times per week for the last 6 years, and I've experienced the current dangers and stress of this
corridor regularly. Additionally, I commute to the Elks Lodge by bike multiple times a week. I want to
specifically highlight the need for the new traffic signal at Elks Ln and Higuera. Making a left turn from
Elks Ln onto Higuera across 4 lanes of high speed traffic is stressful.
The safety data regarding this corridor is alarming. Between 2018 and 2023, 11 fatal or severe injury
crashes occurred on this specific stretch of roadway. We must take action to address this High-Injury
Network.
Please prioritize safety over speed and vote to move this project forward.
Thank you for all that you do to make our community safer!
Sincerely,
Jesse Englert
San Luis Obispo Resident
