Dear SLO City Council Members, I just became aware of the city's plans for South Higuera St. This obsession with bike lanes is costing us millions of dollars, and the plethra of posts, curbs, planters, lanes, and crosswalks have not made things better. As a decades-long cyclist I refuse to use many of the new lanes constructed because they are dangerous and badly designed. I have personally witnessed several near misses that were neither the fault of the cyclist nor the motorist but solely the poor design of the lanes. Further, I received a "survey" from the city several weeks ago regarding the new bike lanes. It was completely one-sided because it allowed zero input from motorists on how the lanes have changed vehicle driving in our neighborhoods. Having moved here almost 20 years ago, I was thrilled with the bike lanes through the city and county. What the city is doing now, however, is not improving our town. Please end this fixation on bikes above motor vehicles and cancel this expensive project on Higuera Street. Sincerely, R. Shanks 108 Del Norte Way San Luis Obispo, CA 93405 1
