Subject:Enforcement Officer needed for illegal fraternity events
Dear Mayor Stewart and Council Members,
re: Request for funds to provide a temporary enforcement officer for illegal fraternity events
I live on Hays Street a couple blocks from the Grand Ave entrance to Cal Poly. On our block, where Hays
reaches a dead end, there are eight homes. Four of them are permanent owner-occupants and the other
four are rented to students. This year, beginning in the Fall quarter, there have been at least six fraternity
meetings total spread over three of the rental homes. They have occurred in the afternoon and the
evening. They have involved dozens of visitors to these homes each time and lots of cars parked
haphazardly up and down the block for several hours. There has been drinking and loud shouting plus
loud music and loud game playing often during these events. Trash is left on the street and in front of our
homes when these events end.
These are illegal events for the zoning of our neighborhood but there does not seem to be any
enforcement available from either the school or the city. Please arrange for that lack of enforcement to
change for at least two years. Then we can prevent this degradation of our neighborhood from getting
even worse and perhaps see some improvement for a while.
