Subject:Comment in Auppoer od Hiuguera Complete Streets Initiative
Good Day,
I want to submit my support for the complete streets project in Higuera st.
This street has been the site of at least one fatal bike vs car incident. The wide unobstructed lanes
encourage motorists to travel well above the speed limit endangering other users of the street including
other motorists.
The proposal to add bike lanes would enhance the safety for people on bikes as well as pedestrians and
other motorists as the calming effect of the bike lane reduces the speed that motorists travel.
Higuera street does not appear to have enough traffic to impede the travel of emergency vehicles.
Additionally, the design of the Madonna Rd Ped/bike lane creates numerous conflicts between bikes and
peds sharing the same space as well as conflicts with motorists entering and exiting businesses along
the Madonna rd. Motorists tend to look for oncoming traffic and miss seeing bikes on the sidewalk. I
have had numerous close calls on that section and unfortunately will avoid it if possible. The bike lane
on higuera will give me the chance to ride down higuera and to avoid tank farm road from broad to
higuera. A HUGE safety improvement.
