HomeMy WebLinkAbout2/24/2026 Item 4a, Co Wil Co < To:E-mail Council Website Subject:February 24 Study Session on Rental Registries Dear Mayor, Councilmembers, and Staff: As part of this study, I'd like to add a personal point on the importance of a rental registry:  Consider the new CA Bill AB2747 which requires landlords to prompt tenants for positive credit reporting services. My building does not meet the size requirement of this bill BUT I believe we qualify under the exception in section (j).  Section (j) states the building size requirement is exempt if the landlord is a corporation (which mine is) and the landlord owns more than one residential unit (which I believe mine does).  This part is where I need a rental registry: to confirm if my landlords owns property and is legally obligated to offer positive credit reporting. After several emails, my own landlord refuses to tell me if he owns a residential property because of the (small) additional work he would be obligated to do. This new bill doesn't work if landlords refuse to cooperate.  Furthermore, I've contacted several branches of SLO records for this information and the only answer I got was "we don't collect this type of information". So, without a good way to verify rental information about my landlord, I have little recourse here. Please, for renters and giving these new bills some merit, positively consider the rental registry! Thank you for making renter protections a part of our Major City Goals, and for your commitment to ensuring safe and stable housing for every resident of our City. I sincerely appreciate the time and effort staff have put into engaging with stakeholders and preparing the comprehensive report accompanying the agenda for this Tuesday's study session. Respectfully, 1
