Subject:Rental registry
Hello City Council,
I am a landlord in San Luis Obispo. I do not support setting up a rental registry program. I do support having
safe, healthy and happy places for people to rent and live there lives but this is just an additional fee and
paperwork requirement being placed on the landlords that will be passed on to the end renter. This doesn’t
address the issues that affect people from having safe, healthy and happy places to live. I believe the primary
offenders are well known by the city as the complaints that have rolled in. The resources that are available
should be applied to those offenders that are already identified. Also the city is currently working in a funding
deficit. This program will take more staff and resources than the city has. Time would be better spent
implementing the state laws that already exist around this issue and implementing things like getting existing
landlords to get a business license for their rentals in San Luis Obispo. As I know currently landlord’s do not
know that they are required to have a business license to have rentals in San Luis Obispo. This will get you a
lot of the information that you’re looking for from the rental registry by just implementing the program you
already have and it will generate more funding to the city if people are paying there business license fees.
Thank you for your time and service to this community but a rental registry will not help the renters who need to
be supported and this will handy cap the small local landlords that are actually trying to do a good job.
Sincerely,
Marrie Brown
