Subject:Public Comment for Rental Registry Study Session 2/24
Dear City Council Members and City Staff,
I am here on behalf of the SLO County Tobacco Control Coalition in strong support of a mandatory rental
registry that links code enforcement data, includes a clear health and safety checklist for tenants, and
makes certain data publicly available.
A well-designed registry would benefit both tenants and property managers by clarifying current rental
standards, increasing transparency, and supporting data-driven policy decisions here in our community.
Our coalition reviewed more than 20 rental registry programs across California. We found that the City of
Fresno includes a comprehensive health and safety standards checklist that could serve as a useful
model for San Luis Obispo.
We also encourage the City to consider including within a checklist that identifies whether smoking is
prohibited within units with a lease agreement to protect tenants from secondhand smoke exposure and
reduce property damage.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Best regards,
Leah Burnett
