Subject:Tonight's Study Session on Rental Registries
Dear Mayor, Councilmembers, and Staff:
I want to thank you for integrating renter protections into our Major City Goals and for your dedication to
securing safe, reliable housing for every member of our community. I am truly grateful for the diligent
work staff has invested in stakeholder outreach and the creation of the thorough report provided for this
Tuesday’s study session.
As staff’s analysis clearly shows, a mandatory and universal rental registry is the only way for the City to
gather essential data on our local housing market that remains otherwise inaccessible. This information
is critical for refining the City’s General Plan Housing Element, identifying optimal locations for multi-
family developments, and crafting evidence-based policy. Successful, revenue-neutral rental registries
are already standard practice in numerous cities and counties across California and the country; there is
no practical obstacle to achieving that same success here.
We share a vision of a thriving community with vibrant neighborhoods where every resident, without
exception, enjoys housing security. I urge you to continue advancing these initiatives with a sense of
urgency to turn those goals into a reality.
Respectfully,
Trent Johnson
