HomeMy WebLinkAbout2/17/2026 Item 4a, Atkins Kathryn Atkins < To:E-mail Council Website Subject:Higuera Complete Streets Project Regarding the CC Meeting on February 17, 2026, specifically the Higuera Complete Streets Project. I was going to go to the meeting and make a public comment, but due to the storm I decided it was not safe for me to be out driving. I live in the Rancho San Luis Mobile Home Park on the corner of S. Higuera and Prado Rd. If you don’t come down here often, you have no idea at the amount of traffic we have at certain times of the day! And the amount of times Emergency vehicles are called to assist residents along this corridor. I don’t know how many residents we have from Elks Lane to Los Osos Valley Road, but I have the Pulse Point App on my phone and there are many calls for medical issues along S Higuera. When one calls for a medical emergency not only does the Ambulance come, but also the very long fire truck from the Fire Department. Since your meeting on 02/17/2026 every time I drive on S. Higuera St coming from or going to my home,I am amazed that you would even CONSIDER make it a 2 lane road!! I understand wanting to put in bike lanes, but that could be done just like on other streets with the green paint. But honestly, after living at Rancho San Luis for the last 6 years, I have NOT seen a multitude of bicycles on this street! I have lived in San Luis for the majority of my life, (I am 71 yrs old). I used to go downtown for most of my life. But since Covid and the concrete dividers for bicycles, reduction of lanes on Marsh and Higuera, the ridiculous parking fees, and being unable to walk from the parking structures due to hip problems, I find no reason to go downtown anymore. If you look on the Nextdoor website where KSBY asked how the community felt about the Higuera Complete Streets Project, you will see an amazing amount of people against reducing the lanes on S Higuera and putting in those ridiculous curb dividers for the bike lanes. This city, my city, my tax dollars are being wasted on these so called “improvements”. And after listening to your budget talks at the meeting which I watched online, our city money can certainly be used in a more substantial way in areas where we really need it. Putting in these bike lanes with the curbs and reducing the lanes available to automobile traffic is going to hamper those who live on and just off of S. Higuera St. All the housing complexes on the streets just off S Higuera St that have been built up over the last 20 yrs , and those who come to shop at Trader Joe’s and Food for Less and other businesses makes for a VERY congested thoroughfare. Why didn’t you put in one of those traffic counters or something like that before you considered narrowling the traffic lanes? What could this mayor and council possible be thinking?? 1 Please take a drive from Madonna Rd, down Los Osos Valley Rd and onto S. Higuera St around 4-5:00 on any weekday and you will see with your own eyes what we see and have to maneuver through every day. You really must reconsider this project.
