Subject:Rental Registration Meeting
I attended the meeting discussing Rental Registration last week. I was surprised that the motivation or
goal for Rental Registration was not stated, and seemingly not clearly defined or understood by the
council. Even the slides presented asked the question "What is the Goal" of this program.
This appears to be a solution in search of a problem. From what other cities have done the possible
objectives are;
Code Violation (Already a system in place for this, improve this if needed).
Rent Stabilization
Rent Control
Improved estimate of the number of rentals (Much cheaper way of doing this and why is more
accuracy needed).
If rent control/stabilization is the objective of the council, then at least have the honesty to clearly state
this. The fact that more council questions were focused on enforcement of the program rather than the
need or objectives left me very concerned, and I got the impression approval is a forgone conclusion. The
last thing we need is an increase in the city bureaucracy.
Can you please state why this is neeed?
