Subject:Proposed Rental Registry
To City Counsel Members:
My husband and I are opposed to the proposed Rental Registry.
The City already has programs and regulations to address what is being proposed.
1. We are already required to get a business license. The license contains the rental address, the property tax
number, and how much is paid in rent each year. Every two years we are required to provide proof of the rental
amount we claim.
2. There are City rules, and consequences, when tenants are repeatedly causing noise or other problems.
3. There are health and safety rules, and a provision for rental inspections by the City when there is a
complaint about a property.
We believe that this proposal would cost property owners, and eventually, their tenants more money. For
property owners who contract with a property management company, it would cause more work for the
company to provide additional information to the owner.
This is government overreach! The information it proposes to gain is redundant. The city already has much of
this information. The proposal would create another level of government imposing more control on its
residents.
We wonder, given the information that is already available through city, county and Cal Poly data, could a
rental registry be created from that data?
Thank you for your consideration of our thoughts and reasons opposing this proposal.
Sincerely,
Betsy and Herb Alloway
