I am in support of the continuation of the subcommittee’s work to identify existing ATP projects
(or potential gaps) as Safe Routes to Schools priority projects and to identify and possibly
assist with potential funding sources. I encourage the ATC to approve a motion that continues
the work listed under the subcommittee’s report heading, “Potential Immediate Subcommittee
Work.”
If you decide to endorse the report as written overall, please consider striking out the
statement in Item 6.2, listed under the report heading “Bucket of Potential Projects,”
-“(on-pavement Class 2 bike lanes may need to be eliminated to provide necessary width
for a multiuse path).”
This is a very preliminary stage (further study) in planning and therefore it is premature to
suggest the elimination of an existing facility to add a facility not currently in the ATP. You might
also consider a focus on the ATP Tier 3 project, Flora/Fixlini Greenway, to serve your objective
stated on page two of your report (emphasis added), “A principal objective will be to identify
and enhance low-stress routes for each school (e.g., Class III bike routes as alternatives to
parallel high-volume, high-speed roadways).”
Thank you for your consideration of my comments and thank you for the work you do.
