Subject:Housing challenges and rental registry
Dear Members of the San Luis Obispo City Council,
My name is Walter Taylor, and I am a property owner in San Luis Obispo.
I appreciate the City’s efforts to address housing challenges and improve transparency in the rental
market. I am writing to share some concerns regarding the potential implementation of a rental registry
and its possible long-term implications.
In a number of cities, rental registries have served as a first step toward additional regulations, including
rent stabilization policies. While well-intentioned, research and experience from other jurisdictions
suggest that such policies can, over time, reduce housing supply, discourage investment in rental
properties, and impact overall housing quality.
San Luis Obispo already faces significant housing constraints. It is important that any new policies be
carefully evaluated not only for their short-term benefits, but also for their long-term effects on housing
availability, affordability, and the willingness of property owners to continue investing in this community.
I respectfully encourage the Council to take a measured, data-driven approach, including a thorough
review of outcomes in comparable cities, before moving forward with a rental registry or related
measures.
Thank you for your time and for your service to our community.
Sincerely,
Walter Taylor
