HomeMy WebLinkAboutChat Fixed (2) 09:51:29 From Greg Avakian - City of SLO : Good morning everyone! We will
be starting at 10:00am. So please feel free to settle in and ensure your audio and
video are working. We will be with you all shortly.
09:57:52 From Devin Hyfield : For those just joining, meeting will be
starting shortly. Please use the chat features if you have not already
10:06:58 From Zoey Marie : Since you’re recording this, will it be
available to watch again or for others who have not attended to watch?
10:10:15 From Aleah Bergam - City of SLO : Zoey, great question. We will
not be posting these to the website, but we have 4 other meeting opportunities for
others to join and a survey. The recording is for staff to utilize to make sure we
collect all the feedback to shape the final concept plan/grant application.
10:13:09 From Helene Finger : can all ages use this?
10:13:33 From Patrick McGrath : This is a really interesting idea and our
family would love to see a dirt track come to life! Lower right picture looks great.
10:14:16 From Shauna Gustuson : we like this too but would prefer a paved
track for all wheels to use.
10:14:28 From Helene Finger : what are use by gender for these?
10:14:32 From Viktur Flowers : yes! great idea! especially for kids.
10:14:51 From Patrick McGrath : Ah, that makes sense..
10:15:26 From Zoey Marie : I think it’s probably not worth putting grass in
the center as people will ride through that area (it happens!).
10:15:27 From Christina soto : this would be great, if it could be used for
all wheels
10:15:40 From Shauna Gustuson : thats a great idea. I would come to a
roller session for sure and bring my child to the kids sessions. a whole day at the
park.
10:16:15 From Anna Johnson : I don’t think the park is big enough to
support a bike track
10:16:18 From Tommy Gunz : yes I agree ot would be great if it was
accessible for all wheels
10:16:37 From dianeshervem : So someone would have to be there?
10:17:17 From Zoey Marie : I’m wondering how you keep the bikes in only
this area and not riding through the entire park.
10:17:25 From Patrick McGrath : Shade is great! The last couple heat waves
have been unbearable. Is there a way to incorporate water to shade for additional
cooling? Shade structure/splash pad?
10:17:33 From Zoey Marie : I think shade is always a good idea in a park.
10:17:38 From Greg Avakian - City of SLO : Diane- Yes, we could monitor it
with staff similar to the Skate Park and/or post hours.
10:17:44 From Christina soto : definitely like shade
10:17:51 From paulcappellano : the butterflies would be great for the age
group that uses the playground primarily
10:18:14 From Zoey Marie : Maybe you can create shade structures that have
solar panels on top?
10:18:25 From Greg Avakian - City of SLO : Patrick: we would need to
consider fencing around the pump track plus incorporate design and location to
mitigate risk of "rogue bikes
10:18:53 From Anna Johnson : shades at Pismo Pier look have added beauty to
👍the area
10:19:10 From Shauna Gustuson : @zoeymarie maybe bike lanes from entrances
could help that. That's a valid concern
10:20:27 From Zoey Marie : I like the way the younger kids are enclosed in
their bike riding at Meadow Park. It add safety, easier monitoring. It’s less
flexible, though for mulitple uses but with posted times, it might work without too
much monitoring.
10:21:00 From Zoey Marie : I agree with Helene with respect to considering
gender up front.
10:21:48 From Aleah Bergam - City of SLO : Zoey - we will make a note for
solar panels on top of shade structures to!
10:21:54 From dianeshervem : Posted hours won’t keep riders from going when
they want. I see all kinds of people use the park incorrectly even with posted what
to do.
10:22:17 From Marisa : any restroom would be great. is such a challenge
being there with small kids and having a bathroom emergency
10:22:33 From Christina soto : yes definitely need restrooms. safe n clean
restrooms
10:22:34 From Zoey Marie : Diane, that’s true, I’m trying to figure out how
to monitor without it becoming a big deal. I’m not terrible optimistic about that
behavior
10:23:01 From John McKenzie : Would there be timed locks installed?
10:23:07 From paulcappellano : I like the unobtrusive, oval looking
restroom option
10:23:26 From dianeshervem : When the park was originally created the
community stated they did not want them because then homeless would hang out.
However, that is a problem anyway so that didn’t solve that issue.
10:23:30 From Patrick McGrath : Steve here; does a bathroom change this
from a community park to a more regional park?
10:23:46 From Anna Johnson : there is a big homeless problem in the park
right now, how will you monitor these bathrooms
10:24:18 From Zoey Marie : I would love bathrooms in the park but I do have
concerns about malingering. Not sure how we prevent that.
10:24:23 From Patrick McGrath : @Diane: The homeless issue is less at
Emerson and more prevalent at Mitchell, where the restrooms currently exist. We no
longer go to Mitchell for this reason.
10:24:42 From Christina soto : homeless is an extreme issue in slo
10:25:10 From dianeshervem : I agree that restrooms are a big concern.
10:25:14 From Zoey Marie : What are other towns doing about this issue?
10:25:33 From Sarah Billeter - City of SLO Staff to Helene
Finger(Direct Message) : Helene I see you have a raised hand. Would you like to
speak?
10:26:16 From dianeshervem : People drive here from around the community.
10:26:44 From Shauna Gustuson : I think that no matter where the bathrooms
are, if they are public the homless will be an issue no matter what. I think that
with our park rangers and the location of them on the property could help.
10:27:29 From John McKenzie : Low maintenance and durability would be my
choice
10:27:30 From Zoey Marie : I don’t have a problem with homeless using the
facilities but camping out there all day is not acceptable for most people.
10:27:30 From dianeshervem : I love having the fitness equipment but was so
sad to see it get damaged. The equipment we have now is a good selection.
10:27:58 From Christina soto : I love the fitness idea!
10:27:58 From Marisa : does the current equipment need to be replaced or
are you looking to add more?
10:28:06 From paulcappellano : Grant money for Fitness equipment should be
used to maintain it, the machines that are there are sufficient
10:28:10 From Zoey Marie : Is it possible to have a walking track around
the perimeter with a surface like the high school’s track?
10:28:10 From Patrick McGrath : Can we get a better fence around the
equipment? The fencing gives it a temporary look.
10:28:14 From Shauna Gustuson : i love the fitness court and its esthetic.
10:28:39 From Shauna Gustuson : a walking track is a great idea.
10:29:08 From robertspector : can these also be designed more multi
purposed ` i.e community walking
10:29:31 From robertspector : love the idea of walking track
10:31:01 From dianeshervem : Why isn’t there lighting on the walking path
at Meadow?
10:31:38 From robertspector : the more we can multipurpose functions, the
better. Ex. walking trail, exercise function, etc.
10:32:09 From dianeshervem : I agree with concern about lighting in the
park and how close it is to my house.
10:32:18 From Zoey Marie : Also, in Meadow, the trees have grown a lot and
obscure lighting.
10:32:23 From robertspector : safety has to be an overall concern of all
design
10:33:16 From Zoey Marie : What is the name of the group that will be
discussing safety that we can attend?
10:33:49 From Zoey Marie : thank you
10:34:21 From Devin Hyfield :
https://www.slocity.org/government/advisory-bodies/agendas-and-minutes/parks-and-rec
reation-commission
10:35:22 From dianeshervem : More than one. Add lines for other uses. One
of the most used areas of the park.
10:35:26 From Devin Hyfield :
https://www.slocity.org/government/department-directory/master-plan-and-element-upda
te
10:35:41 From Patrick McGrath : Steve here; one court, lit, not two
10:35:43 From Christina soto : definitely multi purpose court
10:35:49 From Zoey Marie : Could you email these links to attendees? It’s
hard to copy it on this chat.
10:35:51 From Anna Johnson : pickle all
10:35:55 From Shauna Gustuson : resurfacing and a multi use court is very
much needed. Santa Rosa Park courts/rink fill us quick with hockey, rec roller
skaters, basketball, hockey, parents with smaller childern too small to hit the
park. there is a huge community
10:36:02 From Anna Johnson : picklball!
10:36:04 From Zoey Marie : one court and a pickle court added
10:36:11 From Sarah Billeter - City of SLO Staff to Zoey Marie(Direct
Message) : What is your email?
10:36:20 From Tommy Gunz : It would be great if we could think about
resurfacing and expanding the blacktop area for the possibility of a skate area
similar to the track at the SLO skate park. The skate community in our area has
grown so much over this past year and Central Coast Roller Derby would love to have
a second option for skate area to utilize for practice and skate time as that track
may not always be available to us with hockey and other sports.
10:36:23 From paulcappellano : I like the court surface, but the backboards
could be updated as well as having an off court area just to shoot
10:36:31 From Shauna Gustuson : i feel like pickle ball has 2 places to
play already. can we share?
10:36:38 From robertspector : basketball court is good idea. could/should
be multiuser. i don’t think the court needs to be full-length
10:36:45 From Devin Hyfield : We can email the links to the Parks and Rec
Commission meetings as well as the P&R Element update after the meeting
10:37:06 From Zoey Marie to Sarah Billeter - City of SLO Staff(Direct
Message) : Not crazy about more skateboards in this park - it’s too small
10:37:08 From robertspector : should be glass backboards
10:37:21 From Marisa : I think one Court should remain for basketball, it
seems to get a lot of use
10:37:27 From Christina soto : pickleball has numerous places. I think we
could not add it here.
10:39:16 From Christina soto : yes! definitely!
10:39:42 From Christina soto : resurfacing the black top is a great idea
10:40:02 From robertspector : dartboard would be fun for multi age activity
10:40:08 From paulcappellano : can part of the paved area be used for the
bike track?
10:40:39 From Zoey Marie to Sarah Billeter - City of SLO Staff(Direct
Message) : Is the current blacktop area big enough to accommodate all these
different uses and still be a pathway though the park?
10:40:57 From Devin Hyfield : paul - that is a possibility to put the pump
track on the paved area
10:41:02 From Patrick McGrath : I like that idea of adding the paved area
to the bike track/walking trail/gym--rather than having a bunch of disparate
activities, a focus should be to have all the different aspects be cohesive.
10:41:05 From Greg Avakian - City of SLO : Paul: Yes, the park can be
completely redesigned in regards to locations of current and future amenities
10:41:20 From Sarah Billeter - City of SLO Staff to Zoey Marie(Direct
Message) : Hi Zoey this is a direct message to me, please switch to sending messages
to Everyone
10:41:22 From dianeshervem : We will be getting rid of the current
community garden?
10:41:29 From Zoey Marie to Sarah Billeter - City of SLO Staff(Direct
Message) : I agree with Patrick’s comment above
10:41:37 From Kelly Hefernon : love the garden concept!
10:41:47 From John McKenzie : do not think zen path appropriate - need
peace and quiet which won't be here.
10:41:49 From Zoey Marie to Sarah Billeter - City of SLO Staff(Direct
Message) : how do I do that? I didn’t intentionally change anything?
10:41:50 From robertspector : the walking path and pathways should be
combined
10:42:18 From John McKenzie : Community gardens should be retained or
increased if demand is there
10:42:35 From paulcappellano : not enough space in Emerson to expand garden
10:42:38 From Patrick McGrath : How's the waiting list on the existing
community garden? If there's a long list, let's expand it.
10:42:44 From Marisa : as long as the current community gardens remain. and
agree with John that they could be increased if demand is enough
10:42:51 From robertspector : pathway should go through the comm. gardens
10:42:58 From Sarah Billeter - City of SLO Staff to Zoey Marie(Direct
Message) : Where you write your message there's an option of who to send it to
10:44:14 From Zoey Marie : @Sarah, got it, thanks.
10:44:27 From Sarah Billeter - City of SLO Staff : awesome!
10:44:43 From Patrick McGrath : More gardens, more landscapes/bioswales,
less blacktop
10:44:54 From Zoey Marie : I would like to see more flowering trees/plants
in Emerson. It makes it more welcoming.
10:45:16 From dianeshervem : Just the community garden.
10:45:33 From Patrick McGrath : Drought tolerant & butterfly friendly
10:45:43 From Zoey Marie : Absolutely butterfly friendly
10:45:49 From John McKenzie : due to space limitation, keep it to community
gardens only
10:46:21 From John McKenzie : zen garden should go to open space lands
10:46:58 From dianeshervem : Current lawn is fine
10:47:21 From Kelly Hefernon : This area is perfect for a dog park.
10:47:25 From dianeshervem : because it provides optimal space
10:47:38 From Marisa : I agree that a dog area should be incorporated
10:47:46 From Anna Johnson : you should keep it accessible this year
because of the pandemic. I know you close it down every year to allow the grass grow
but this year should be an exception
10:48:09 From paulcappellano : The lawn feature as a playing surface should
stay the same space-wise, but be better in terms of irrigation and weed control
10:48:09 From John McKenzie : Enclosed dog park - good idea with lawn or
wood chips
10:48:28 From Patrick McGrath : @Anna--that's a good point. It'd be nice to
see a way to keep some of the area open year-round. It's always a bummer when nearly
half the space closes.
10:48:30 From Patrick McGrath : Also, dogs!
10:48:48 From Zoey Marie : I would rather see a community garden than a dog
park.
10:49:25 From John McKenzie : Yes. 1500 homes within 1/2 mile or 850 dogs.
Dogs need place to run off leash.
10:49:27 From robertspector : love the walking path around the green space
- while i would like a dog space, we need a large lawn area
10:50:14 From Zoey Marie : When I think of dog park, I think of a much
bigger area. Is there a need for a much smaller dog park here? I don’t know much
about dog parks but maybe a smaller dog park is for smaller dogs? Forgive my
ignorance.
10:50:18 From Marisa : it's such a large area and gets a lot of use.
partial open learn, partial dog area. it seems like a lot of people in that area
that may not have full yards take their dogs to run around and enjoy the space, it
would be nice if that could continue
10:50:25 From Christina soto : maybe if the dog park is enclosed, but to
have grass to relax and spend time would be nice, picnic and play.
10:51:33 From dianeshervem : No lighting for sports at all
10:51:39 From John McKenzie : new residential development downtown will
have no yards - people will need place to take dogs
10:51:57 From Anna Johnson : No lighting unless it is very low to the
ground
10:52:18 From Patrick McGrath : Lighting for safety and for use in the
winter months.
10:52:24 From dianeshervem : The park has residences on three sides.
10:52:34 From robertspector : lighting is a critical factor in addressing
our concerns re: to real and perceived safety
10:52:37 From Kelly Hefernon : Low lighting only.
10:52:58 From John McKenzie : low directional lighting for safety is good
10:53:00 From Zoey Marie : Yes, lighting is essential.
10:53:20 From Patrick McGrath : Push button idea is super cool
10:53:22 From Shauna Gustuson : lighting for safety is important.
10:53:30 From paulcappellano : push button lighting, good idea
10:53:53 From Zoey Marie : I do agree the major lighting should be off by
8pm
10:54:42 From Anna Johnson : timer lights only until 8 pm
10:54:47 From dianeshervem : Not only does lighting affect neighbors it
also encourages use later into the evening and noise.
10:55:47 From Greg Avakian - City of SLO : Diane: Yes, great points.
Thank you. Staff will definitely consider the time of use for the park since it is
surrounded by housing.
10:55:48 From dianeshervem : Upgrade the one we have. Have water bottle
fill and the faucet.
10:56:00 From John McKenzie : Yes on dog water station!
10:56:01 From Zoey Marie : We want the park to be used. Having operation
hours is meant to control how late lights are on and noise will be reduced when the
park closes, right?
10:56:07 From Kelly Hefernon : Love the water bottle refill, and of course
water for dogs!
10:56:14 From paulcappellano : hydration station by the basketball court
would be helpful
10:56:23 From Shauna Gustuson : yes, hydration is a must. clean, drinkable
water. The k9 and water bottle designs work great.
10:56:26 From Zoey Marie : Yes, water stations for animals and people.
10:56:50 From robertspector : as a policy model, we need to support water
for bottles, people, and dogs
10:56:56 From Zoey Marie : Can there be more than one water station?
10:57:17 From Patrick McGrath : Splash pad!!!!
10:57:39 From Aleah Bergam - City of SLO : Yes, we can do more than one
water station!
10:57:45 From Anna Johnson : what is the plan to deal with the homeless?
10:57:45 From Helene Finger : safe routes to bike and walk to park
10:57:48 From Greg Avakian - City of SLO : Zoe: Yes. All considerations
based on the location of the amenities. i.e., near the playground, near the
restrooms, near the gardens...
10:58:05 From Anna Johnson : and overnight encampments? We’ve seen tents
put up, for days, and obviously no one is doing anything about it
10:58:09 From Patrick McGrath : Upgrade the perimeter fencing from chain
link to something more architectural
10:58:22 From Patrick McGrath : 1/4 mile walking track around the whole
park would be great
10:58:36 From robertspector : how about moving the rec office elsewhere and
using the building for classes and other community use
10:58:37 From John McKenzie : Dog park would cater to all age groups and no
other area nearby to accommodate a dog park.
10:58:48 From Marisa : is a bike service station, with an air pump being
considered? theres a pretty cool set up near the staff public works entrance at the
old courthouse
10:59:00 From Shauna Gustuson : fencing can be landscaping and natural
looking barriers
10:59:01 From nancygrant : How will the homeless sleeping in the park be
handled?
10:59:07 From elizabethaebischer : Splash pad would be really fun!
10:59:20 From Zoey Marie : Misters for the kids/dogs?
10:59:24 From Aleah Bergam - City of SLO : we are definitely considering a
bike pump station
10:59:32 From robertspector : also, we should have a stafgwe od
amphatheater in the park for community events, productions, etc
10:59:46 From John McKenzie : Dog park also makes this a more walkable part
of the city - an important city goal
10:59:50 From Shauna Gustuson : yes, please address safety and the homeless
issues
11:00:33 From robertspector : anything that attracts more park use will
serve to increase safety concerns
11:00:39 From elizabethaebischer : Yes, homeless are using the bathroom and
parking by the park. They are not dangerous just need a safe place to use the
bathroom and park for the night…better bathroom facilities.
11:00:44 From Zoey Marie : Thank you for doing this meeting. I know it’s a
challenge for everyone but I appreciate your hard work
11:00:58 From Devin Hyfield :
https://www.slocity.org/how-do-i/register/e-notifications
11:01:03 From Patrick McGrath : Seconded, Zoey!
11:01:12 From dianeshervem : Will the other meetings be same agenda?
11:01:17 From paulcappellano : thanks everyone for having an intelligent
discourse
11:01:20 From Aleah Bergam - City of SLO : Yes, Diane
11:01:29 From Helene Finger : thank you for reaching out, please also
consider Spanish o
11:01:34 From Helene Finger : engagement
11:01:56 From Zoey Marie : Does putting the bathroom outside the actual
park help reduce the homeless issue? Are there studies on that ?
11:02:17 From Aleah Bergam - City of SLO : I'm not sure about that Zoey,
but we can look into that.
11:02:24 From elizabethaebischer : Yes, opportunities for our
Spanish-speakers to be involved. Maybe reach out to Hawthorne School? They are
closed off and not a resource for their families.
11:02:52 From Zoey Marie : We have public bathrooms at the Mission vs in
park bathrooms so you should be able to review it and the effect on the surrounding
areas.
11:03:15 From elizabethaebischer : I mean, Hawthorne’s play area is locked.
Hawthorne is very open to serving the community.
11:03:50 From Zoey Marie : What if our favorite is not on the list???
11:03:57 From Patrick McGrath : Hydration station and bathrooms should be
separate.
11:04:25 From Devin Hyfield : If you do not see yours listed, please add to
the chat funcion
11:04:38 From Zoey Marie : Walking track is my first!
11:05:16 From Marisa : dog area and fence update is one of my top 5
11:05:22 From John McKenzie : top 5 - dog park, community garden, bathroom,
workout area
11:05:23 From Marisa : *two
11:05:23 From paulcappellano : upkeep of the playing field
11:05:37 From Kelly Hefernon : Dog park is my top design feature. we
really need an enclosed dog park in the City and this is a perfect size and
location.
11:05:38 From robertspector : you didn’t list walking path which would be
very high to me…as well as dog capability
11:06:06 From Anna Johnson : have more police presence
11:06:34 From Patrick McGrath : Walking path, updated fencing, expanded
gardens
11:07:28 From John McKenzie : It looks like dog parks would have been a top
5 had it been listed
11:07:30 From nancygrant : Add to list: bocci courts, walking/jogging path,
11:10:07 From Patrick McGrath : Can these be more integrated? Those are
pretty disparate and disconnected.
11:10:08 From Zoey Marie : The existing community gardens stay there?
11:10:49 From Zoey Marie : I think the design of this park can accommodate
most of what we want but it needs a better design than what we are starting with.
11:10:55 From robertspector : add waking path around perimeter and add
“theater” on “left corner”
11:12:11 From nancygrant : I ike Bob’s ideas re: walking path around park,
& outdoor entertainment area
11:14:51 From dianeshervem : I did not find gold star
11:14:59 From Aleah Bergam - City of SLO : click stamp
11:15:03 From Aleah Bergam - City of SLO : and then star is an option
11:15:56 From elizabethaebischer : You can erase your star with the eraser.
11:15:57 From Zoey Marie : Could someone help me with this function? I
cannot find where to begin.
11:16:16 From Marisa : I'm on mobile and I don't see the stamp option
either
11:16:22 From Shauna Gustuson : youre doing a great job running everything
11:18:15 From John McKenzie : After putting in the star, I hit undo and
star disappeared
11:18:59 From Marisa : sounds good, thank you. my stamp option is an arrow
11:19:30 From nancygrant : Put pump track away from Bocce Courts.
11:19:36 From elizabethaebischer : This is also a great way to do a
community forum. Hope this stays an option even after COVID.
11:20:54 From Marisa : that's true, Dave. parking is a huge problem over
there, have you noticed and chance since the enhancement of the bike thruway?
11:21:03 From Marisa : any change*
11:22:04 From Marisa : how many of the lot spots are currently reserved
handicap spaces?
11:22:07 From dianeshervem : Parking is a very big issues!!
11:22:30 From Shauna Gustuson : parking. yes, it is an issue. Greg has lots
of valid points. Thank you Greg.
11:22:37 From Anna Johnson : we agree with Greg regarding parking!
11:23:08 From dianeshervem : I agree with Greg. The new housing on Higher
with no parking all those residences park up here.
11:23:12 From elizabethaebischer : I hear that, Greg. If the park becomes
more of a destination park and not a neighborhood park, parking will be an issue.
11:23:12 From Marisa : I think raised/accessible beds in the garden area is
a great idea
11:23:28 From dianeshervem : Higher should be Higher.
11:24:04 From dianeshervem : Self correct keeps changing Higuera to higher.
11:24:08 From robertspector : he makes yet another case for moving the rec
staff offsite and freeing that space for community use. also, the community gardens
should have raised beds which would make them more accessible and attractive
11:25:35 From elizabethaebischer : Yes, I also agree about more raised beds
and wheelchair access. Would the city consider a contract with a non-profit like
One Cool Earth for garden maintenance and education?
11:27:14 From Aleah Bergam - City of SLO : For those just jumping on we are
going to the top of your zoom winder and click "view options" select "annotate" and
select "stamp" - star
11:27:15 From nancygrant : Forget Bathrooms until homeless situation is
handled.
11:28:37 From Marisa : I think the bathrooms should be near the playground,
children have emergencies and are unlikely to make it to their nearby house without
an accident
11:28:57 From Christie Cutter : Late to this meeting, any chance of b rooms
being attached to existing building? Better security in view of people working
there?
11:29:11 From Patrick McGrath : The bathrooms should be near the splash pad
for ease of changing in/out of wet clothes...
11:30:49 From elizabethaebischer : Further from playground because some
children are afraid of dogs.
11:30:59 From Marisa : I agree with Elizabeth
11:31:42 From dianeshervem : Area isn’t large enough for dog park and
sports and picnic, etc.
11:32:03 From Christie Cutter : Dog park? This was not in the info I read…
11:32:25 From John McKenzie : Should be 1/2 acre in size - there is enough
room for big and small dogs
11:32:32 From Zoey Marie : I agree area is not large enough but I was
considering that many people with kids have dogs so I chose close to the playground.
But again, I feel it’s not big enough. It will end up as a dog potty area.
11:32:40 From Aleah Bergam - City of SLO : Christie: Dog park was an idea
that came up earlier and so we wanted to include it due to its popularity
11:32:49 From elizabethaebischer : Hard to star perimeter
11:32:52 From robertspector : it seems like we need to address the
potential repurpose of the rec office space in light of many of the issues raised
11:33:28 From John McKenzie : dog park shape does not need to be
rectangular - irregular shape can be better
11:33:34 From dianeshervem : If walk to park don’t need a walking path.
11:33:36 From nancygrant : I prefer a jogging/waking path around the
exterior of the park.
11:34:09 From robertspector : i’d like the walking path to be as large as
possible around the circumference of the park
11:34:23 From Zoey Marie : My experience in Europe was that parks with
walking paths tend to be in a sort of figure 8 through the area available, which I
like but am not going to draw all over your map!
11:34:51 From John McKenzie : whatever the shape, make it a loop
11:35:33 From Christie Cutter : Speaking of tech savvy, one neighbor I
spoke with yesterday said he was not tech savvy and was wary of changes, his house
faces the park. The flyer I received was printed way too small for him to read. Is
city doing any outreach for people like him?
11:35:38 From paulcappellano : there is a sidewalk around the park that
could be the walking path
11:36:01 From John McKenzie : along walkways and areas potentially to be
available after dark
11:36:07 From Christie Cutter : I question lighting and night use of the
park in this residential neighborhood
11:36:08 From Zoey Marie : The point of the path is the type of surface -
so that you don’t have to walk on concrete.
11:36:29 From robertspector : we cannot compromise on safety lighting. the
minimum should almost equal the maximum
11:36:57 From Zoey Marie : Also, you can landscape around the walking path
to make it inviting and encouraging people to participate as opposed to a sidewalk
that is not meant for lingering.
11:37:56 From dianeshervem : Just upgrade the one we have.
11:37:56 From Zoey Marie : short lighting fixtures through out the park but
with adequate light cast to cover the area. Taller lights at entrances/exits and
corners or areas blocked by trees.
11:37:59 From elizabethaebischer : two, one by playground and one by dog
park
11:38:10 From Patrick McGrath : Fun fact: a splash pad can double as a
hydration station.
11:38:13 From Zoey Marie : When you plan lights remember that over time
plants will grow and occlude the lights.
11:38:20 From Christie Cutter : Walking path? Please don’t pave any more
of it, there’s a sidewalk all around the park!
11:39:00 From John McKenzie : 2-3 spaced around park close to high activity
area; dog park should have at least one (in each of the small and big dog areas)
11:39:04 From robertspector : should be multiple water stations…near
basketball, playground, exercise, etc.
11:39:07 From Shauna Gustuson : i feel that we ned to remember that
hydration should also be thought of as something for everyone...not just people in
the park. street side hydration is a great idea.
11:41:13 From dianeshervem : Maintenance could be improved.
11:41:15 From nancygrant : Maintenance needs to be improved.
11:41:47 From dianeshervem : More trash cans and trash cans emptied more
often.
11:41:47 From Zoey Marie : Going back to blacktop area, can’t some of this
area be DG which is a bit kinder to the environment?
11:42:27 From Zoey Marie : I would hope that longterm maintenance would be
a big part of this development.
11:42:31 From John McKenzie : if dog park added, volunteer group (Friends
of SLO City Dog Parks) would help maintain
11:42:38 From Patrick McGrath : Or at least some sort of impermeable
surface with underground rainwater storage?
11:42:54 From Aleah Bergam - City of SLO : Christie - we did have staff go
door to door, and we do have a survey available. I'd encourage you to provide him
with the staff contact info presented at the beginning if he would prefer a phone
conversation.
11:43:39 From robertspector : maintenance is a real cost of operation and
must be kept up to date, lighting is a key deterent to crime, homelessness issue
must be addressed (sensitively)
11:43:48 From Shauna Gustuson : we could also get a pump track and roller
sports park patrol together. enough people want to see it happen and will pitch in.
11:43:53 From Zoey Marie : What is the policy/regulation about tents in the
parks during the day?
11:44:53 From Zoey Marie : I’m not sure volunteer groups to patrol or
monitor/control behaviors of park users is a good idea.
11:45:07 From Shauna Gustuson : good point Greg. thank you for that
reminder
11:45:15 From robertspector : the best safety strategy is linked to having
more activity in our parks
11:45:21 From elizabethaebischer : I use the park often and the homeless
people who use the park have been respectful and maintained distance. I agree that
our community needs to have a more coordinated response to the systemic problem of
poverty and mental health.
11:45:45 From robertspector : agree with the above
11:47:25 From Zoey Marie : I agree that regular use of parks by the housed
public is a way to lay claim to the park and that depends on the design of the park.
That’s why it’s important to have these meetings. So we can create a venue we will
use often.
11:47:27 From Patrick McGrath : Well said, thanks, Greg.
11:47:34 From Zoey Marie : Thanks, Greg
11:48:52 From Marisa : thank you, Greg for spreading on that. and Elizabeth
for spreading to your experience. the homeless population is part of our community.
they live within the community and deserve to be treated with the same compassion as
every other member.
11:51:19 From Patrick McGrath : Update the chain link fence to something
more appealing.
11:51:39 From nancygrant : When the police extradite homeless encampments
but no alternate sites are made available to the homeless, the problem is not
solved.
11:52:19 From Shauna Gustuson : native plants. drout tolerant. live fencing
using landscape
11:52:25 From dianeshervem : Keep it completely enclosed
11:52:29 From Patrick McGrath : I like having it enclosed so that children
aren't chasing balls into busy Pismo
11:52:39 From elizabethaebischer : Less blacktop! More trees. I like that
it’s enclosed. Agree with Patrick.
11:52:58 From John McKenzie : landscaping should be drought tolerant, low
water using; if dog park added, shade trees around perimeter (and/or windrows within
to create boundaries); at entry points into the park; keep it open for good sight
lines into park
11:53:05 From Zoey Marie : I prefer a park that can be closed at night
during non-operational hours. Definitely get rid of the chain link - too
prison-like.
11:53:07 From Christie Cutter : You need the fence to keep ball sports
inside boundary, this is really a very small park.
11:53:34 From robertspector : more tall tress would protect neighbors from
light, noise, and intrusion. more attractive exterior fencing is needed and would
be more attracive
11:53:52 From Patrick McGrath : Is there consideration of rainwater
storage? It'd be cool to have this a "certified green park" or some such
designation...
11:53:59 From dianeshervem : Tall trees don’t help the noise
11:54:22 From Aleah Bergam - City of SLO : Yes, Patrick we have thought
about rainwater storage located by the community gardens
11:54:24 From Zoey Marie : Trees all the way around - you have a chance to
do some education about trees here in your choice of trees. I’m fine with some
native plantings but not the entire park. I also like color and flowering
plants/trees.
11:54:25 From elizabethaebischer : More rainwater storage and use of gray
water. Drought tolerant.
11:54:25 From Christie Cutter : Drought tolerant and permeable surfaces,
collecting water and storing for landscaping
11:54:34 From Zoey Marie : Water storage is vital
11:54:36 From robertspector : more green is good
11:54:58 From elizabethaebischer : Yes!!! More ART!!
11:55:28 From Patrick McGrath : Have the community paint the tiles that are
installed in/around the splash pad
11:55:30 From Kelly Hefernon : Love the idea of functional art.
11:55:37 From Zoey Marie : Sculpture can include musical features as well,
bells. Kids love to touch everything, so creating music would appeal to them.
11:55:53 From Aleah Bergam - City of SLO : Love that idea Zoey!
11:55:57 From elizabethaebischer : Hydration station…sculpture? Get
artists involved.
11:56:09 From Christie Cutter : Please use locally made space efficient
bicycle racks called “Peak racks”, space is premium! It’s a small park!!!
11:56:09 From Zoey Marie : Functional art is great.
11:56:09 From John McKenzie : Dog art (with dog park); should not make it
too special so to keep outside traffic down... functional and interactive art is
great
11:56:18 From Shauna Gustuson : musical features are great. science
features
11:56:54 From paulcappellano : incorporate murals, public art into the type
of fencing you want
11:57:05 From elizabethaebischer : Coordinate temporary art with local
schools?
11:57:16 From Zoey Marie : Functional art can include insect homes,
trellises, etc
11:57:18 From robertspector : community art (even interactive) is always
appreciated by the community. even with differences in taste, public art is
enriching to people of all ages. art needs to be part of our civic life
11:57:28 From Shauna Gustuson : mural to honor our local native American
tribes
11:57:39 From John McKenzie : murals good especially to avoid graffitti on
buildings/ solid walls
11:57:50 From elizabethaebischer : Walking path could be a “gallery” with
changing featured artists.
11:57:56 From robertspector : a gazebo would allow us to showcase public
and live art
11:57:57 From Zoey Marie : Public art usually draws people in to explore
and then they will return.
11:58:09 From Anna Johnson : we liked when you had the food truck event!
11:59:08 From Zoey Marie : I like elizabeth’s idea about art along the walk
track is a good idea.
11:59:08 From robertspector : agree on the value of the food trucks
12:00:42 From robertspector : why would we not want more art vs. less?
12:01:03 From elizabethaebischer : I want all of these!
12:01:20 From Christie Cutter : Keeping facility well maintained and clean
is more important to me than additional art
12:02:10 From dianeshervem : I agree with Christie
12:02:17 From Patrick McGrath : If not approved, is Measure G another
funding source for Emerson?
12:02:41 From Zoey Marie : I think the reason I selected limited native
plants is that they are all more or less the same height and become tedious to look
at. That could be altered with different colored plantings, or in the groupings
being spaced out rather than filling large areas.
12:03:52 From dianeshervem : Thank you for having this meeting.
12:03:58 From Zoey Marie : when is the next meeting?
12:04:15 From John McKenzie : Thank you Greg, Dave, staff and all
participants - great meeting!
12:04:40 From Christie Cutter : Thanks for this opportunity
12:04:46 From Zoey Marie : Where is the N Broad St park?
12:04:58 From Christina soto : thank you!!
12:05:03 From Kelly Hefernon : This was fun and very informative. Great
job!
12:05:13 From elizabethaebischer : Thanks so much!! This venue is great
for me! I can fold laundry and participate.
12:05:46 From robertspector : Thanks for a good session. Kudos to all.
12:05:58 From Aleah Bergam - City of SLO : Wednesday, January 13th 12-2
Wednesday, January 20th 9-11
Thursday, January 21st 12-2
Tuesday, January 26, 6-8PM
12:06:14 From Shauna Gustuson : thank you for a great meeting everyone.
12:06:14 From Zoey Marie : Thank you all, especially City employees giving
up their Sat morning.
12:07:48 From Zoey Marie : WHERE is this park?
12:08:03 From Sarah Billeter - City of SLO Staff : @Kelly Herfernon and
@Patrick McGrath please email me at sbillete@slocity.org to claim your prize! Thank
you.
12:08:23 From elizabethaebischer : Is this by the 101 off of Lincoln and
Chorro?
12:09:05 From Lindsey Stephenson - City of SLO : Yes North Broad Park is
near the Broad Street 101 off ramp
12:11:04 From Sarah Billeter - City of SLO Staff : thank you everyone for
your input!
