Subject:Johnson Ave - lane configuration/parking
Attachments:Johnson_Ave_residential_parking_concept_20260505.pdf
Good afternoon,
My name is John Asplund, a 36 year resident of San Luis Obispo and a 10 year home owner living at 2038
Johnson Ave. I would like to share my unique perspective on some of the benefits and trade-offs related
to adding limited street parking to Johnson Ave while reducing the Southbound lanes to 1 in the regions
between Lizzie street and Fixlini/Ella.
Please see the attached concept map and listing of Pros/Cons and mitigations.
Thank you for your time and attention!
Sincerely,
John Asplund

Concept - Johnson Ave, 1-Lane South, North Side Residential Parking
Restoring street parking for residents on Johnson Ave between Lizzie and Bishop St. would greatly improve convenience for
residents (both on Johnson and Fixlini) while enhancing safety and minimizing impact to other community metrics.
Proposed lane change would reduce the Southerbound lanes to 1 between Johnson Ave. between Lizzie and Bishop streets
(approximately ~2 full blocks) while adding street parking on the North-East side (while retaining full bike lanes N&S)
Pros:
1)Safety – increases visibility for Johnson residents leaving
driveway
a)Most addresses have retaining wall blocking view
particularly of the fast, down-hill bike lane
2)Safety - Reduce traffic speeding on Southbound lane
3)Safety – Allows residents to exchange vehicle order in single car-
width driveway without having to back into Johnson traffic
4)Safety - Added street parking for delivery drivers and services
(UPS, FedEx, plumbers, gardeners, US Postal Service, etc.)
without blocking 1 lane of Johnson Ave.
5)Added street parking for Johnson Ave residents and intersection
with Fixlini, guests, etc.
6)Retain 2 lanes into main French Hospital entrance (both N&S)
Cons:
1)Reduced access for Ambulance/Residents to French Hospital
a)Mitigated by retaining 2 lanes into hospital (both N&S;
please see diagram)
b)Alternative/backup entrance to Hospital available on Ella
2)Reduced traffic flow in emergency situations (fire evacuation)
a) Mitigated by retaining 2 lanes Southbound
b)Johnson Ave already reduces to 1 lane each direction 2
blocks South!
3)Reduced traffic flow into / out of SLO High School
a)Mitigated by retaining 2 lanes Northbound (~8:30am is the
high traffic time when all classes begin)
b)Afternoon traffic leaving from SLOHS is distributed
between 3-4:30pm
4)Southbound residential traffic into Ella neighborhood limited by
1 lane
a)Mitigated by dedicated turn-lane into Ella (see diagram)
