I implore staff, with Council’s oversight to do everything conceivable in this project to SLOW down traffic. Add additional safety measures if necessary, especially northbound downhill from Bishop! Yesterday afternoon, two high school students walking home south on the east side of Johnson were nearly hit by a fast moving vehicle. Walking side by side in front of my house…..ear pods in, eyes glued to their phone, laughing & not paying attention to traffic. To get around a telephone pole in the sidewalk, one stepped out into the bike lane. At the same time a vehicle heading north on Johnson obviously exceeding the speed limit, encroached the bike lane and came very close to the student. Horrible outcome averted. Similar scenarios occur often up and down the street. Friends of mine who live on Bishop St. drive their two daughters to the high school everyday because they’re not comfortable having them walk on Johnson. Children are our most precious residents, having one become a statistic would be a tragedy. In closing, I will keep beating this drum until something meaningful is done. Johnson Ave is NOT safe for pedestrians….please fix it. Thanks Dan Carpenter 1
