San Luis Obispo City Council Comment Meeting Date: May 19, 2026 Item Number: 6.b. 2026 Vision Zero Action Plan Hello, I am writing to express support for the recommendations on Tables 12-22 of the 2026 Vision Zero Action Plan, particularly those on wider corridors such as Broad, S. Higuera, LOVR, and Foothill. I'd first like to recognize the incredible work the City and staff have done to expand safer infrastructure for all; our city is practically unmatched by peer jurisdictions in California when it comes to transportation infrastructure and I am very excited that we continue to invest in roadway user safety. Projects such as the recently completed diet of Tank Farm Rd and the upcoming Higuera Complete Streets are prime examples of responsible roadway safety improvements which also have the added benefit of reduced costs for ongoing maintenance. That said, there are still big gaps in safety: our high-volume arterials. Simply put, the density of uncontrolled access points and pedestrian/cycle conflict points can make for an incredibly uncomfortable experience for all users of these roads. As a user of Broad Street (I traverse the length from El Capitan to South most days, split 50/50 between walking and driving), I am especially supportive of recommendations which aim to decrease vehicle speeds, restrict dangerous turn movements, and increase safe crossings for pedestrians and cyclists. As we hopefully increase density along these corridors, the recommendations in the Vision Zero Plan can help to promote safe and sustainable commute and travel patterns. I hope that the City continues to pursue low-cost spot improvements and I would encourage the consideration of alternative funding mechanisms for very-low-cost projects (i.e. community fundraising for wayfinding signage, business/org sponsors for restriped crossings) which could tap community support and accelerate minor projects across the city. Thank you for the consideration of the 2026 Vision Zero Action Plan and I'd like to reiterate my thanks to staff for their preparation of the plan.
