I applaud the city working to improve the safety on our streets. It’s been an issue on my mind for a few years
now as the area I live in has had a huge increase in housing, shopping and hotels over the past several years.
My concern is the intersection of Los Osos Valley Rd and Madonna Rd. I walk twice a day every day and
witness so many close calls especially in the crosswalks. When I moved from Los Osos to SLO 23 years ago
we had a crossing guard at the intersection of LOV Rd and Madonna. Now that there are 2 additional large
apartment complexes with many children walking to school and a huge increase in traffic the crossing guard
has gone by the wayside.
One of the main problems is traffic turning right on the north west corner of LOV Rd from Madonna. Drivers are
looking right, not stopping and not paying attention to pedestrians who have the right of way because drivers
have no idea the signal on Madonna heading north on Madonna is green. We need a large red no right turn on
red signal so traffic can heading north or west can actually turn on their green light and pedestrians can
actually safely get across the street.
It’s a terrible intersection, not to mention the city is constantly changing the signal cycle so living in our small
neighborhood (DeTolosa) you never know what to expect and it pretty much never benefits this neighborhood.
Although they finally are giving us a few extra seconds to get across the street.
Anyway, it’s not ideal safety wise, especially for pedestrians at this intersection.
Thank you for the opportunity to express some thoughts.
