SUBJECT: Resolution for Cesar Chavez
RECOMMENDATION: Adopt a Resolution Honoring Cesar Chavez
DISCUSSION:
At its April 5, 1994 meeting, the City Council asked staff to contact the Coalition for
Healthy Cities to determine if they would like, in response to their request, a proclamation
or a resolution recognizing his birthday on the last Monday in March and declaring that day
as Cesar Chavez Day. If a resolution was requested, Council asked staff to bring it back to
for approval.
The Coalition was contacted and requested a resolution, which is presented for your
approval.
CONCURRENCES:
The City Administrative Office and City Attorney have reviewed and approved the proposed
resolution.

RESOLUTION NO. (1994 Series)
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF SAN LUIS OBISPO RECOGNIZING THE LAST
MONDAY IN MARCH AS CESAR CHAVEZ DAY
WHEREAS, Cesar Chavez, founder and president of the United Farm Workers of
America passed away at the age of 66 on April 22, 1993; and
WHEREAS, Cesar Chavez was a charismatic leader who sowed hope and self
determination, especially among minority workers in their daily struggle against social
injustice and economic hardship; and
WHEREAS, Cesar Chavez inspired an entire generation of Americans to participate
in political and social action, and motivated many to answer the call to public service; and
WHEREAS, Cesar Chavez dedicated his life to the improvement and humanization
of farm worker employment and living conditions, and his struggle for that cause poised the
social consciousness of the American Labor Movement; and
WHEREAS, Cesar Chavez promoted the self esteem and education of working class
people, encouraging them to become active contributors to a more equitable and integrated
society, and
WHEREAS, Cesar Chavez was one of this nation's most dynamic and effective
spokespersons in the environmental and consumer movement against the unlawful and
unhealthy application of pesticides on food products; and
WHEREAS, the commitment of Cesar Chavez to organized non-violent social,
political and economic action to bring about the well being and just treatment of America's
farm working class is consistent with the principles of our democratic society and serves as
a model for others to follow; and

WHEREAS, the declaration of a Cesar Chavez Day in the City of San Luis Obispo
would greatly enhance the self esteem of a growing and significant hispanic-speaking
population, and raise the social and cultural consciousness of the community-at-large.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of San
Luis Obispo does hereby resolve that the life, values, and'sacrifices of Cesar Chavez be
memorialized by recognizing his birthday on the last Monday in March as Cesar Chavez Day
to honor his birth and lifetime achievements.

residential condominium (planned unit development) on the north side of Foothill Boulevard
(680 Foothill Blvd.) west of Ferrini Road; Richard H. Porter, applicant. (Continued from

♦ RECOMMENDATION: Adopt resolution adopting the Negative Declaration and approving
the tentative map, subject to findings and conditions as recommended by the Planning
Commission.
