As a daily cyclist, I witness distracted drivers and speeding drivers who do not seem to realize they are behind the wheel of a murder weapon. I have reached out to the city on multiple occasions, asking for a speed assessment on Buchon St where some drivers do not adhere to a 25 mph speed limit and instead choose to drive up to 40mph, only slowing down when they arrive at the stop sign on Buchon/High St and occasionally sailing right through. It seems that the speed humps on High St have encouraged some drivers to move over to Buchon as their speed-hump free thoroughfare. Because I work downtown and cycle daily to/from work. I see examples of bad driving behavior, and I will admit that some cyclists do not adhere to the rules of the road either, but the consequences of their actions are much less than that of someone behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. I do want to add that the bicycle left turn boxes don't seem very safe to me at certain intersections, one being the Marsh/Moro intersection by the post office. Drivers heading up Marsh do not seem to understand what I'm doing when I wait in the box, and I can see them become confused as they drive past, or worry that I am ready to ride out in front of them, not realizing I am merely waiting my turn. I would say that more driver education surrounding bicycle lanes and boxes might help, but I am just not sure. Due to our transient nature - many people driving into San Luis Obispo to work everyday and students who do live here permanently, it feels like many just cannot be bothered to understand the rules of our road. Lastly, I just want to say that speeding up and down Marsh and Higuera has really gotten out of hand. These two streets are heavily traveled by pedestrians, especially in the downtown core (Nipomo, March, Santa Rosa, Higuera, Monterey) and I've seen so many near misses, I have stopped counting. It's almost exclusively someone driving too fast, not seeing a person in the crosswalk, etc...so scary. Thank you for reading this lengthy email and considering! Rebecca Drake 1
