I would also like to voice my opinions on the Vision Zero that has been prepared to drive these safety improvements. While there are many areas that deserve the City's attention to reduce collisions and injuries, I am particularly aware of the section of Broad Street between South and Orcutt. This section of road has become so dangerous to pedestrians and cyclists that I have heard it referred to as the "death alley" of our city. I live just one block away from Broad on Lawton Avenue and walk and bike on this section of Broad regularly. While I have thankfully never been party to a collision here, I have had several near misses. In my opinion, the action items listed in table ES-2 of the Vision Zero Plan for Broad Street are helpful. Some additions that would make a huge difference in my mind would be improving pedestrian connectivity between the west and east sides of Broad Street to reduce the number of people playing frogger while crossing the busy road. Additionally, my closest calls have been with drivers driving too fast on the ancillary streets along the west side of Broad Street, at Caudill, Rockview, and Mitchell, and Lawton. Drivers using these streets as a way to avoid driving on Broad drive way too fast and are in a hurry to get back to the main thoroughfare. I believe that improved signage of speed limits in this neighborhood and a REDUCED SPEED LIMIT on Broad Street would have a significant positive impact on pedestrian and cyclist safety. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Rachel Best SLO resident for 9 years 1
