Subject:Agenda item 6b (Vision Zero Action Plan) - Lawton Ave. and Funston Ave.
Dear Council,
My name is Desi Lance and I live on the corner of Funston Ave. and Lawton Ave. This is one block away
from South Ave. and one block away for Broad St., so very close to the intersection of South Ave. and
Broad St. as well as nearby where a recent vehicle fatality occurred (Broad St. and Woodbridge Ave.). I
understand that Broad St. has been designated as a high injury network segment, which is why my
comments below are relevant to the Vision Zero Action Plan agenda item.
When the intersection gets backed up at South and Broad (multiple times during the day, but most
noticeably during the morning, school and evening commute times), many vehicles try and avoid the
traffic light by cutting through our neighborhood. These vehicles speed and do not pay attention as they
are focused on avoiding traffic. They either cut from South to Broad behind the gas station or from Broad
to South (especially when the Woodbridge pedestrian/bike crosswalk gets activated).
There are at least six (6) children under the age of 10 that live at the corner of Lawton Ave. and Funston
Ave. They cross the street to go to the park (Meadow Park is a block away) or visit each other's homes,
including my 9-year-old son. He also plays basketball in the driveway. The excessive speeding and lack
of attention by drivers seeking to avoid traffic at the intersection makes it unsafe for him and the other
neighborhood children.
We are asking for traffic calming measures at the corner of Funston Ave. and Lawton Ave. to minimize the
desire of drivers to cut through our neighborhood. Right now, drivers are enticed by the lack of stop signs
and/or other traffic calming measures on Lawton Ave. We wish to detract them from speeding through
our neighborhood, making it safer for all that live and walk around here.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Kind regards,
Desi
