Subject:Fwd: May 26th Meeting
Hello,
It has recently come to my attention that the City Council may be considering zoning code changes that
would allow fraternity members living together in residential neighborhoods to hold events without those
properties being treated or regulated as fraternities.
That raises serious concerns about accountability and enforcement. If fraternity-related events can
occur at houses occupied by fraternity members, but outside the formal fraternity structure, it risks
creating a loophole where large gatherings continue without meaningful oversight or enforcement.
I am also concerned that the City appears to be moving away from proactive enforcement at a time when
residents need stronger neighborhood protections. If enforcement is reduced, or if the zoning code is
changed in a way that makes fraternity activity harder to identify and regulate, the burden will fall on
residents.
We raised our family on Hathway Avenue for about 25 years. It was a quiet residential neighborhood with
responsible residents, families, and working adults. I feel for the people living there now who continue to
experience ongoing disruption from large late-night gatherings and expanding fraternity activity within
residential neighborhoods.
It would be helpful for the city to strengthen enforcement and protect residential neighborhoods,
not weaken the policies that allow fraternity operations to be identified and addressed.
Thank you,
Cindy Vix
