Subject:South Broad Street Corridor Plan (consent agenda item)
Dear Mayor and City Council,
We are writing to express our strong support for the SBSCP on the consent agenda for your meeting
Tuesday. This is an important step towards improving safety for all users, but especially pedestrians and
cyclists on Broad Street. We know how much life will improve for the nearby residents and users of
Broad Street once the corridor is improved, because we have experienced the safety improvements the
City engineered near us.
We live on Poinsettia Street and are grateful for the long awaited improvements the City recently
completed on Tank Farm Road and Sacramento Street. Unless you live in our neighborhood and for 35
years had to turn left onto Tank Farm Road, it's hard to understand what a difference the safety project
has made in our quality of life. We now turn onto TFR without the anxiety we experienced since moving
to the neighborhood in 1991. Cars now stop for pedestrians at both new crosswalks, bicyclists have
plenty of space from cars and movements into and out of our connecting streets are much safer.
The new pavement and widening of the bike lanes on Sacramento now make it safer to bike on
Sacramento. We would like to point out that the long straight stretch of Sacramento still seems to invite
cars to race down the street. A four way stop at Capitolio would help slow traffic and be safer for
pedestrian crossing. Classical Academy will draw families and kids to Sacramento, so we hope your
staff continues to work on making that street as safe as possible.
Thank you for the steady dedication to improving safety in SLO and we hope you approve the SBSCP.
Sincerely,
Jackie and Ben Parker
