Subject:Hybrid beacon planned at South and King
Dear council committee members,
As HOA President, and a 39-year resident of the Village condominiums at 2250 King Court, I am writing to protest
the current planned flashing red hybrid beacon at South and King streets.
Tra?ic is already heavy at certain times of the day. When trying to turn on to South from King Court to head West,
sometimes the only break we get is someone hitting the current flashing yellow lights allowing us to make the turn
while a pedestrian holds up tra?ic.
If you switch to flashing red, we will be stuck at that red light for the full hybrid cycle, and then even longer as the
stacked-up tra?ic begins to thin out.
I fear drivers (like me) may be stuck waiting for several minutes to make the turn, one car at a time.
As someone who was involved in the original South street road diet (after the 2005 Halloween death of Kimberly
Macias), the plan with Caltrans was to go from four lanes to two, add pedestrian safety medians, lower the speed
limit from 45, then have enough warrants to add a full tra?ic signal there.
Adding the bike greenway, and flashing beacons was never in the plan. The fire department’s concern of not being
able to get through in an emergency with a full tra?ic signal will be a potential problem even with the red hybrid
beacon stacking up tra?ic. I feel this is a fallacious argument, as they would still have control of the signals.
Please change the project from the hybrid beacon to a full tra?ic light.
Thank you for your consideration
