Subject:Traffic Light on King & South Streets
Hello Council Members,
I am writing in response to the proposed change at the intersection of King and South streets.
Below are three reasons that you should take my suggestions into consideration:
1. Last July, I was in an accident involving three cars at this intersection. I was T-boned while I was
waiting to turn right onto South from the stop sign on King. The reason for this collision was due to a
person turning left with not enough time to complete the turn. Three cars were totaled and I am still
dealing with the injury I sustained in this accident. Thankfully, there were no pedestrians involved.
2. I have been a pedestrian who has nearly been hit in this crosswalk. The crosswalk light was blinking, all
cars on South were stopped to allow me to cross, and a person on King St in a car took their chance and
turned left onto South St, almost hitting me in the crosswalk. The visibility, especially during evening
traffic is horrible and it's difficult to see pedestrians even when the light is blinking from all sides.
3. This is a residential area with an elementary school and a park nearby. I live a block away from this
intersection and more housing is being built.
Below are my recommendations:
1. Install a standard traffic light at this intersection. A pedestrian beacon would do little to allow cars to
turn left onto South St. Travellers on South should wait a reasonable amount of time to allow
pedestrians, cyclists, and residents in vehicles to cross/enter/exit the cross streets.
2. Reduce the speed limit on South from 35 to 30 mph. In my observation, the majority of the cars on
South St drive 40 mph. If all vehicles had been going 30 mph last July, there may have been enough
reaction time to prevent the crash I was involved in.
3. Additionally, please install a crosswalk at the corners of Beebee and South streets. It is nearly
impossible for pedestrians and cyclists to cross here, especially with cars at speeds of 35 & 40 mph!
