Subject:Proposed traffic light changes along South Street
For over 30 years, I have been a resident of San Luis Obispo. I have lived on Woodbridge Street during that
time. According, I know the adjacent roads, the traffic lights, the traffic flow, and the pedestrian/vehicular
movement along/around South Street very well. I also know where the congestion points are, and where the
safety concerns are.
Recently I have learned that the city is exploring traffic changes along South Street. A traffic light has been
proposed to be placed at the intersection of King and South. Presently there is a pedestrian only light in this
location. To my understanding there has not been a detailed traffic study to support such a proposed change.
And, there seems to be little documented evidence to support a need for this change.
Recently, a pedestrian light was installed at the intersection of Woodbridge Street and Broad Street. This light
has caused traffic delays at that intersection. Because of this, my wife and I no longer use that intersection,
and use instead Caudil St. or Mitchel Dr. to get to Broad. Other people do the same. This places additional
cars on those small roads, which could be a dangerous situation for residents. My concern is that the same
will happen to Woodbridge St. - more people will use Woodbridge to avoid any traffic that would occur due to a
South/King traffic light.
Before any definitive action is taken, would the City please conduct a detailed study of the area, and develop a
plan based on sound, professional reasoning.
