To: Mayor Stewart and Council Members Boswell, Francis, Marx and Shoresman
From: Lea Brooks, Active Transportation Committee Member
Safe Routes to School is the ATC’s top priority. We recommended a pedestrian hybrid beacon at
South and King streets because we were informed there were not enough traffic warrants to justify a
standard traffic signal.
Had there been enough time for the ATC to consider the proposed modification to a standard traffic
signal, members would have carefully reviewed the staff report and considered public comments.
Because the ATC did not have an opportunity to review the proposed modification, as an individual I
am not going to make a recommendation. I trust that your decision will be based on what is the safest
option for school children and other people who walk, bike and roll on the neighborhood streets.
If a standard traffic signal results in motorists diverting to neighborhood streets, including Exposition,
Woodbridge and Corrida, I strongly support measures to slow traffic to help discourage this behavior.
These neighborhood streets are popular with pedestrians and people on bicycles, including school
children, who are avoiding the heavy traffic and high speeds on South Street.
Thank you.
