Honorable Council Members,
Regarding Item 7d: Thank you for reviewing the proposed project and considering the modification to the
South Street/King Court crossing. I support the change to authorize installation of a standard traffic
signal in lieu of a pedestrian hybrid beacon and I hope that the Council will approve the modification.
I am confident the City Engineer will provide the appropriate signal configuration that will, first and
foremost, provide the greatest safety to pedestrians and our Safe Routes to School. Hopefully, the design
can feature Leading Pedestrian Intervals similar to the downtown area, while providing exclusive or
protected pedestrian phasing and right-turn-on-red restrictions. To further protect the crosswalks, the
neighborhood would highly value incorporating tight radius controls at the right-hand turn pockets.
Not to exclude the importance of traffic flow, I hope the South St vehicular phasing can include
Permissive-Lefts and resting in green phasing. Seeing resting in red with permissive lefts for King Court
would also be great safety consideration for the minor approach.
Thank you again for reevaluating the project for to find the best balance for safety and traffic flow.
