Subject:Support for Full Traffic Signal at South Street and King Street
Dear Mayor and City Council Members,
I am writing to express my strong support for installing a full traffic signal at the intersection of South
Street and King Street, including a “No Right Turn on Red” restriction.
As someone who regularly travels through this area, I believe a full signal is the safest and most effective
solution for managing the growing interaction between vehicles, pedestrians, and school-related traffic.
While I understand a pedestrian hybrid beacon has been proposed as an alternative, I am concerned that
it could create significant traffic disruptions along South Street due to the high volume of pedestrian
activity in this corridor.
Given the frequent pedestrian crossings, particularly during school drop-off and pick-up times, the
beacon would likely be activated continuously, resulting in repeated traffic stoppages. This could make it
increasingly difficult for drivers attempting to turn left or right from King Street to find opportunities to
safely enter traffic.
A full signal would provide a more balanced and predictable system for all users. By allocating dedicated
time for vehicle movements and pedestrian crossings, it would improve safety while maintaining a more
efficient flow of traffic through the intersection.
I appreciate the City’s efforts to improve safety in this area and encourage you to move forward with a full
signalized intersection rather than a pedestrian hybrid beacon.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Michelle Houser
