DISCUSSION Madonna Road Apartments located at 1550 Madonna Road., is a federally subsidized housing complex, owned by the Contractors Association, and operated by the County Housing Authority. Currently there is one small inadequate play area in the complex. This play area serves over 150 children. Several months ago, Cal Poly Community Services, a student run organization, identified the need for a larger more contemporary play area. After further review, these students were determined to provide a safe and interesting play area for children of all ages, through a program known as INTO THE STREETS. INTO THE STREETS is a participatory-educational program developed to provide Cal Poly students with a hands-on approach to community service projects. The student's aim is two-fold: to create a new, more appropriate play area; and, to give student volunteers experiences that will also benefit the community. The project will be overseen by two construction management students from Cal Poly. This Will serve as the student's senior project. Funds for the project must be raised by the students, and the projected budget is $5,978.24. Currently, $1 ,400.00 has been secured for the project. A request has been made to the City for $1 ,000.00. CONCURRENCE Parks & Recreation Department staff concurs with the request, citing the necessity for an accessible, safe neighborhood play area for residents of Madonna Road Apartments. With the request approved, the City can assist in providing this necessary play area, with a small monetary contribution. In addition to creating the play area, the Cal Poly Community Services students will "Adopt" the play area to insure its maintenance and upkeep. FISCAL IMPACT The $1,000 City's contribution will be funded fromwitliin existing resources. ATTACHMENTS 1 . Vicinity Map 2. Playground location 3. Plan for the playground 4. Playground equipment 5.
