Dear Neighbors ,
For those of you whom I have not met, my name is Deborah Marcus and I
am a piano teacher who works from home at 1247 Vista del Lago . For quite
some time now, I have been involved in a dispute with my neighbor wh o
lives at 1251 Vista del Lago, concerning my license from the city to teac h
piano students in my home . There will be a hearing before the City Council
on January 17 `''regarding the issues involved .
My neighbor's complaints have focused primarily on the sound of my
Steinway grand piano when I play for my personal use or when I allow 4-5
advanced adult students to use that instrument for their lessons .
The majority of my teaching is done on an upright piano in a different are a
of the house . My neighbor has not objected to the sound of that instrument .
Since the use of the grand piano has been such a bitter matter of contention ,
I have decided not to use it at all as long as we live side by side, in order t o
satisfy his concerns . This will be the basis for my appeal to the City Council .
However, there is another objection to my teaching from my home which I
regard as truly invalid, and it reads as follows :"Continued operation of th e
business will adversely affect the health, safety, or welfare of persons livin g
in the vicinity and will interfere with residential welfare in the area ."
I have been teaching in this neighborhood since September of 2008 . If yo u
do not agree with the statement I've quoted above, I would greatl y
appreciate your signing below and including your address . Thank you for
taking time to consider this issue .
