Thanks for reaching out on this. There will be a concert again this year. I don’t many details to provide just yet (including performers, dates of ticket availability, etc.) as discussions are ongoing. We’ll have more details to share out with the campus and broader community in coming days and weeks. On the enforcement side, still many details being ironed out there as well. I can tell you that many of the policy changes implemented on campus last year will carry forward this year, including a no-guest policy in University Housing facilities over that weekend as well as parking restrictions on campus. Again, more details on this will be shared out in coming days and weeks (though I will add that, from a law enforcement perspective, we won’t be able to provide a lot of specifics in advance, in the interest of maintaining safety during the weekend). Come see for yourself in Building 82 on Jan. 14-15 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. 3 Seeking Donations for Cal Poly’s Pilot On- Campus Thrift Store If you read these newsletters often, you’ll know how excited we are about the Thrift Store opening on campus with the help of Cal Poly’s Green Campus team. With the pilot slated to happen this spring, this student run, volunteer-operated campus thrift store is designed to address a critical gap for students to access non-food necessities on campus. Once open, students will be able to donate unwanted items and take what they need at no or low-cost- a win-win for your wallet and the planet. But before the doors open, Green Campus needs your help to build up the initial inventory. Cal Poly’s New Waste Disposal Guide Let’s be honest—waste is rarely at the top of anyone’s priority list. Most of us have a million other things to think about, and trash usually comes in somewhere near the bottom. This is made clear in the language we use: we say “throw away,” as if “away” is some magical place where our garbage disappears forever. But here’s the truth: there is no “away.” Every piece of trash we’ve ever created is still here on Earth, hanging out somewhere—maybe in a landfill, maybe in the ocean, maybe in a recycling facility that’s doing its best to keep up. That’s why how we dispose of things matters more than we think. Luckily, Cal Poly’s Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) department has made it easier than ever for the Cal Poly community to do the right thing. They’ve created a Waste Disposal Guide where you can learn exactly what campus resources are available for handling the tricky stuff that needs special care. In the guide, you’ll find clear instructions for disposing of: 5  Batteries (improperly disposed of batteries cause expensive fires every day in the U.S.)  Electronics (your old laptop deserves better than the dumpster)  Chemicals and lab waste (let’s keep chemical reactions in the labs)  And other items that require special handling By following these guidelines, you’re not just cleaning up your space—you’re protecting the environment, keeping our campus safe, and making sure hazardous materials don’t end up where they shouldn’t. Join the Eco Reps Club After a bit of a hiatus, the Cal Poly student club, Eco Reps, is officially back for Winter Quarter! Eco Reps is a student-led sustainability group focused on promoting environmental awareness and empowering students to take action toward a more sustainable campus and lifestyle. The club serves as a welcoming space for students of all majors who are interested in learning about sustainability, connecting with like-minded peers, and getting involved in hands-on initiatives that make an impact. SLO the Flow is Almost Here! From Feb. 9 - Mar. 15, Cal Poly Green Campus will lead SLO the FLOW, an annual water and energy conservation initiative, where first year residents get to flex their sustainability habits by competing for first place. The idea is simple: the residence hall who reduces their utility consumption by the 7 highest percentage wins the competition. The initiative will kick off with a festival on Feb. 5, where students can learn about the competition and its goals. Investigators developed a suspect driver who is believed responsible for the felony hit and run of the two Cal Poly students. At approximately 2:30AM pursuant to our ongoing field investigation, we received a tip which led us to the 3000 block of McCollum Dr. where the suspect vehicle was recovered and the driver, 20-year-old Ishan Satyen Pandhare, also a Cal Poly student, was located and taken into custody for felony hit and run. Upon further investigation we have not determined that Pandhare struck any other vehicles after hitting the two students and he did not appear to be under the influence at the time of arrest. The two victims are still in the hospital and in stable condition with broken bones, with one victim requiring a surgery. The department will likely have an outbound media release later today. A special thanks to Cal Poly PD who assisted our investigation throughout the night and into this morning.
